Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - In his first four plate appearances Sunday afternoon, Dash outfielder Terrell Tatum was unlucky, hammering balls to the outfield, but not finding grass. In the bottom of the ninth with the game tied at five, the centerfielder stepped to the plate with the winning run on third. This time, he found the wall in center for the walk off win, 6-5, Sunday afternoon at Truist Stadium in front of 2,878 fans.
Winston-Salem (14-5) found themselves in another tight contest against Hickory (10-9) heading into the later innings. Jonathan Cannon got the ball for the Dash and battled over 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits. The Crawdads went with a bullpen day after their starter Gavin Collyer did not get out of the second surrendering two runs.
For the Dash, they got the two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead. In the third, with a double already on his ledger, DJ Gladney dug in and blasted a ball off the batters eye in center field to make it a 3-1 game.
The Crawdads erased the deficit in the fourth and fifth thanks to a solo home run by Josh Hatcher and a Marcus Smith RBI single. Going into the back half of the game, the Dash and Crawdads were tied at three.
Ernesto Jaquez was the first out of the bullpen in the sixth for Winston-Salem and the right hander fired 1.2 innings of shutout baseball before Jake Palisch worked a 1-2-3 top of the eighth keeping it 3-3.
In the bottom half of the eighth, following a leadoff walk by Loidel Chapelli, Gladney came to the plate again, and on an 0-1 count, he sent a fly ball down the right field line that banged off the foul pole for his second home run of the day, giving the Dash the advantage again, 5-3.
Leading by two heading to the ninth, Adisyn Coffey was brought in going for the save, but Hickory had his number as the first four reached with a run scoring on a Cody Freeman single, and after a Keyber Rodriguez sacrifice fly, we had a new game tied at five. Jeremiah Burke replaced Coffey and stranded the bases loaded sending it to the bottom of the ninth.
Winston-Salem had the bottom three of its order due up, and with one out, Jason Matthews singled up the middle putting the winning run on base. Keegan Fish walked putting two on for the top of the order and Tatum.
The former NC State Wolfpack had been blistering the baseball all series, and despite the 0-for-4 day so far, he got his pitch on a 2-2 count, drilling the ball off the high wall in center, scoring Matthews, and clinching the series for Winston-Salem, 6-5.
Tatum's walk off marked the first walk off win of the year for Winston-Salem who now sit four games up of Hickory in the SAL South Division. Offensively, the Dash were led by Gladney who finished 3-for-4 with a double, two home runs, and three RBI. The Chicago native leads the South Atlantic League in both home runs and RBI.
Following a day off Monday, Winston-Salem welcomes in the Greensboro Grasshoppers, the Pittsburgh Pirates High-A affiliate, Tuesday evening. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. from Truist Stadium.
