(Hickory, NC- August 15, 2015)- The West Virginia Power shutout the Hickory Crawdads 9-0 Saturday night at L.P. Frans Stadium. Stephen Tarpley match his career-best with eight innings and Jordan Luplow hit two home runs and drove in four to pace the Power past the Crawdads.
Neither offense could break through over the first four innings. Dillon Tate, a first round pick by the Texas Rangers, retired the side in the top of the first in his only inning of work. Brett Martin took over in the second inning and allowed four hits and a walk over the next three innings.
Tarpley allowed one hit in the first before retiring seven in a row. After a leadoff single in the fourth, the southpaw retired then next ten consecutive batters.
In the top of the fifth, Martin walked two and allowed a base hit to Kevin Newman. West Virginia manager Brian Esposito sent Taylor Gushue home from second on the base hit, but Hickory left fielder Luke Tendler threw Gushue out at the plate to keep the game scoreless. Luplow followed by hitting a two-one pitch over the left field wall for a 3-0 Power lead.
West Virginia added three runs against Shane McCain in the top of the eighth. Luplow led off the inning with his second home run of the game; his team-best 12th home run of the season. Michael Suchy tripled in Connor Joe after a walk and Elvis Escobar singled in Suchy for a 6-0 edge.
In the ninth, the Power added three runs on three hits, including run-scoring singles by Suchy and Escobar.
Tarpley (10-2) scattered three hits over eight innings while striking out two. 14 of the 24 outs recorded with Tarpley on the hill came via ground balls. Martin (4-6) took the loss after allowing the first three Power runs on six hits over five innings.
