RiverDogs Falter Late, Lose to the Drive 8-5

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Charleston RiverDogs led by two entering the eighth, but the Greenville Drive plated five runs in the frame and took home the 8-5 win, Saturday night at Fluor Field at The West End.

The RiverDogs led 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth as Alex Robinett climbed the hill and began his third inning of work by giving up a single to Yoan Moncada. Michael Chavis followed with his second homer of the game, a two-run opposite field shot to right, which tied the game 5-5. Rafael Devers continued the inning with a double down the line in left and Robinett's (0-1) outing came to an end.

Dillon McNamara was next out of the 'pen and was greeted by back-to-back singles by Nick Longhi and Javier Guerra, the latter of which plated the go-ahead run. Greenville's final two runs scored on a wild pitch and a ground out to first.

The RiverDogs had the top of the order due up in the ninth, but went down quietly against the Drive's Ryan Harris (2-4) and lost by the 8-5 margin.

Charleston jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Angel Aguilar drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored from third on Bo Thompson's sacrifice fly to center. The lead was short lived as Moncada walked, stole second and third, and scored on a throwing error by the catcher in the next half inning.

Chavis connected for his first homer against Jordan Foley in the third and put the Drive on top 2-1 with a solo homer over the monster in left.

All was quiet until the fifth when Vince Conde stepped in with two on and two out. The second baseman crushed an 0-2 pitch from Jeffry Fernandez over the monster in left for a three-run homer and put Charleston in front 4-2.

Two innings later Conde did it again. He hit his second homer of the game, a solo shot over the Monster in the seventh and upped the RiverDogs lead to 5-2. J.T. Watkins got the run back for Greenville with an RBI ground ball that was mishandled by the shortstop Aguilar in the bottom of the frame.

Foley began his outing by striking out the side in each of the first three innings. The righty finished five innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on one hit, he walked three and struck out a career-high 10 hitters.

Over the last five games, Conde is hitting 12-for-20 (.600) with five doubles, four home runs and 14 RBI.
