SALISBURY, MD - Cord Sandberg had a pair of two-run doubles while Will Morris threw seven scoreless innings as the BlueClaws topped Delmarva 8-1 on Saturday night at Perdue Stadium.
Delmarva had won the first game of the series but the BlueClaws, in winning Saturday, improved to 25-15 since July 3rd and stayed within five games of first place West Virginia with 22 games remaining.
Morris, who threw seven scoreless innings, improved to 5-0 since re-joining the BlueClaws from Williamsport on July 5th. He has thrown at least 6.2 innings in each of his last five starts and has allowed just nine runs in 45 innings since returning to Lakewood.
Sandberg, meanwhile, drove in four runs in a game for the third time this season.
The BlueClaws opened the scoring with a two-run second inning. An RBI groundout by Deivi Grullon and an RBI single by Chase Harris put the BlueClaws up 2-0. Then in the third, Cord Sandberg delivered a two-run bases loaded double up the right field line to put Lakewood up 4-0.
In the fourth, Drew Stankiewicz added an RBI single off Nigel Nootbar, bringing home Herlis Rodriguez to make it 5-0. That run was charged to Delmarva starter Brian Gonzalez, who went 3.2 innings and gave up five runs on four hits with four walks, took the loss to fall 4-9.
The BlueClaws added to their lead with a three-run seventh inning which included another two-run double from Sandberg.
Drew Stankiewicz had three hits in the win for the BlueClaws while Chase Harris added two hits of his own. Jiandido Tromp had two outfield assists.
Herlis Rodriguez singled in the eighth inning to extend his hitting streak to 16 games.
The series concludes in Delmarva on Sunday, before the BlueClaws and Shorebirds play three games in Lakewood beginning on Monday. Tomorrow, RHP Tyler Viza (4-7) throws for Lakewood against LHP John Means (8-8).
