Savannah, GA - The Sand Gnats used a three-run homer in the seventh inning to defeat the Greensboro Grasshoppers 7-3 on Saturday at Historic Grayson Stadium. Savannah has won 12 straight and 20 of their last 22.
Greensboro (14-34/43-74) third baseman Brian Schales singled to lead off the second for the 'Hoppers. A passed ball, fielder's choice, and a single from left fielder Eric Fisher scored Schales and gave the 'Hoppers the 1-0 lead.
The Gnats (30-17/69-48) answered with a leadoff double from DH Eudor Garcia and a sacrifice fly by third baseman JC Rodriguez in the fourth inning to tie the game. Garcia extended his hitting streak to eight games with his double.
Savannah added two more in the fifth on back-to-back singles from shortstop Luis Guillorme and right fielder Wuilmer Becerra, each extended their hitting streaks to 13 and seven games respectively.
Trailing 3-1, first baseman KJ Woods hit a two-out double to left. Schales singled home Woods and scored on DH Austen Smith's triple to tie the game at three. Gnats' starter Josh Prevost (4-4) earned just two runs on the night and picked up the win after tossing 7.0 innings.
For the third consecutive game the Gnats found themselves tied late in the game. Rodriguez reached on an error to lead off the home half of the sixth. Second baseman Jonathan Johnson scored Rodriguez on a sacrifice fly to take back the lead, 4-3.
With a one run lead, Savannah was not done. Center fielder Patrick Biondi crushed his third home run of the season with two out and two men on base, giving the Gnats the 7-3 final.
