December 29, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Devils News Release

TRENTON, N.J, -- The Trenton Devils lost to the Cincinnati Cyclones on December 28 upon their return from holiday break. The Devils have a tough road ahead of them for the week with four games, playing the Elmira Jackals on Tuesday, the Johnstown Chiefs on Wednesday, and the Dayton Bombers on Friday and Saturday.

CYCLONES STORM DEVILS: A three-goal second period was not enough for the Trenton Devils as they lost to the Cincinnati Cyclones, 4-3, at Sovereign Bank Arena Sunday afternoon. The Cyclones struck first as Jimmy Kilpatrick knocked in a rebound off of a Mark Van Guilder shot at 4:59 of the first. Down 1-0 after the first period, the Devils would tie the game 3:54 into the second as Jeremy Akeson shot a one-timer from point blank range for his second of the season. Trenton took the lead on the first of Eric Castonguay's two power play goals, a one-timer from the right circle at 5:20. Kilpatrick then scored his second of the game at 14:19 on a one-timer from the slot to tie the game at two. The Devils would regain the lead at 15:44 as Castonguay would collect his second tally of the day on a play similar to his first goal. Cincinnati would again tie the contest as Kilpatrick banged home a shot from a sharp angle on the power play, completing his hat trick at 17:54. Despite dominating the third period by outshooting the Cyclones 8-3, the Devils were undone by Van Guilder's game-winner that came with 9:19 left in regulation. Van Guilder took advantage of a Devils turnover at the blue line and fired a wrist shot to clinch the win for Cincinnati and a four-point night for himself. The Devils went 2-for-2 on the power play, and saw their penalty killing streak snapped at 34 on Kilpatrick's hat trick goal. Trenton outshot Cincinnati, 26-24.

EXCELLENT ERIC: Devils' forward Eric Castonguay has a seven-game point-scoring streak after tallying two goals in Sunday's loss to Cincinnati. Castonguay has four goals and five assists during the streak.

RYAN THE PP SPECIALIST: Ryan Gunderson is tied for first in the ECHL with 18 points on the power play. In 27 games, Gunderson has two power play goals and 16 assists on the man advantage.

QUICK HITS: The Devils have scored a power play goal in each of their last eight games...The Devils have outscored their opponents 28-24 in the second period...Former Trenton Devils goaltender Jeff Frazee is first among AHL rookies with a .926 save percentage.

The Devils defeated the Jackals in their last matchup on December 14, as Trevor Kell scored the game-winning goal with 1:33 left in regulation to capture a 3-2 victory. The Jackals currently sit in fourth place of the American Conference North Division

Wednesday, December 31, 6:05 p.m. -- Devils at Johnstown Chiefs

The Devils travel to Johnstown to take part in the Chiefs' annual New Year's Eve game. Unfortunately for the Devils, the Cambria County War Memorial has been unfriendly, as the Chiefs have won all three games between the two teams at the building in November. The Devils took care of business in their last game against the Chiefs on December 12, a 2-1 win at Sovereign Bank Arena.

Friday, January 2, 7:30 p.m. -- Devils vs. Dayton Bombers

Saturday, January 3, 7:00 p.m. -- Devils vs. Dayton Bombers

The Devils open 2009 with a pair against the Dayton Bombers, who swept the Devils the last time they made the trek to Trenton. The Bombers have been in third place of the American Conference North Division for most of the season, and have been consistent thanks in part to one of the ECHL's biggest surprises, rookie goaltender Paul Drew. Drew is 8-1-1-0 for Dayton this season after going 13-28-0 in his last two seasons with the University of Prince Edward Island.
