Kansas City Monarchs News Release

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The Kansas City T-Bones have announced the signing of Rick Zagone, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound left-handed pitcher from Crystal Lakes, Ill.

Zagone (pronounced Zuh-go-nee), played at the University of Missouri before the Baltimore Orioles selected him in the sixth round of the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft. He spent five seasons in the Baltimore organization, reaching triple-A Norfolk in 2012. He pitched in nine games earlier this season for York of the independent Atlantic League. In six professional seasons, Zagone is 41-36 with one save and a 4.07 ERA. In 668 innings, he's struck out 488 and walked 235.

"We've been having problems with our fifth starter spot all year and we needed a lefty in our rotation, so when Zagone became available, since there was some familiarity with him pitching collegiately at Missouri, he was a no-brainer," said T-Bones manager Kenny Hook. "On top of that, he has a lot of professional experience, pitching as recently as last year in AAA. Adding that to the rotation is huge."

Zagone, who will wear number 32, is scheduled to start the second game of tonight's doubleheader against Laredo at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. The first game of the two seven-inning contests is set to begin at 6 p.m.

Moves during the weekend created room for Zagone on the 22-man roster. The T-Bones on Saturday placed pitchers Connor Graham and Justin Albert on Irrevocable Waivers for the purpose of giving them their unconditional release. Kansas City also signed left-handed rookie relief pitcher Michael Joyce.
