Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS - For the fourth straight season, former big-leaguer Reggie Abercrombie is returning to the lineup of the Sioux Falls Canaries. Canaries manager Steve Shirley announced on Tuesday the signing of the veteran outfielder, who will be active for tonight's game against Trois-Rivières.
Abercrombie, 33, comes off two playing stints in Mexico this season. In 58 games with Puebla and Tabasco of the Class AAA Mexican League, he hit .288 with 11 home runs, 47 RBI and 11 stolen bases. He then played for the Tijuana Toros of the Northern Mexican League, and reached the championship series. With the Toros he batted .346 with five home runs and 20 RBI in 22 games.
"It's always great to have Reggie with our ball club," Canaries manager Steve Shirley said. "He adds a tremendous amount of talent, energy and leadership to our team. I think he will really help us through the end of the season."
Bringing along major league experience with the Florida Marlins and Houston Astros, Abercrombie enters his fourth season in Sioux Falls. He was the centerpiece of the Canaries' lineup for all of 2010-2011 and part of last season. He is especially popular with Sioux Falls fans, who voted him to the team's 20th-Anniversary Team.
As a late-season addition last year to Sioux Falls, Abercrombie hit .336 in 31 games, belting eight home runs and collecting 31 RBI. He swiped five bases and became the all-time franchise leader in stolen bases with 72. He has hit .318 with 47 home runs and 187 RBI in a Sioux Falls career that began in 2010.
From 2006 - 2008, Abercrombie played in 180 major league games with the Florida Marlins and Houston Astros. In 34 games in 2008 with Houston, he batted .309 with a .509 slugging percentage. A professional since 2000, Abercrombie has over 1,500 hits and 300 stolen bases in his career. Abercrombie was selected by the L.A. Dodgers in the 1999 draft.
The Canaries begin a six-game home stand with opener of a three-game series against the Trois-Rivières Aigles at 7:05 p.m. tonight at Sioux Falls Stadium. In honor of National Hotdog Month, hotdogs are only $1 all night. Plus, it is Give Back Tuesday. Any who bring a canned good food item to donate to Feeding South Dakota can purchase two tickets for the price of one.
