Diablos Sneak Past Wingnuts in Ninth

EL PASO, TX- The Wichita Wingnuts (45-24) lost 8-7 to the El Paso Diablos (21-46) at Cohen Stadium on Monday night.

El Paso scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. With the bases loaded and one out in a 7-7 game, Jonathan Cisneros hit a sharp groundball at Wingnuts' second baseman Jake Kahaulelio. The ball took a bad hop and deflected off Kahaulelio's body before falling into shallow right field for the game-winning hit.

Wichita rallied from a 7-5 deficit over the seventh and eighth innings to tie the game. In the seventh, John Rodriguez doubled to right-center field with one out. After C.J. Ziegler walked, Brent Clevlen singled through the left side to cut the lead to 7-6.

Jared McDonald led off the top of the eighth with a single to right, stole second base and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly to center from Rodriguez.

El Paso jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded and one out, Juan Apodaca singled up the middle to drive in Oscar Mesa and Jose Garcia. Sergio Burruel followed with a line drive single down the left field line that brought in Anthony D'Alfonso.

The Wingnuts chipped away with a run in the top of the third. Ryan Khoury doubled to left-center, took third on a Kahaulelio single, and scored on a fielder's choice by Rodriguez.

Clevlen drew a leadoff walk in the top of the fourth. Abel Nieves singled through the right side to move Clevlen to second. Cole Armstrong's hit-and-run groundball put runners on second and third. Jonathan Davis collected his first career RBI with a groundball to shortstop that scored Clevlen.

Wichita went in front with a three-run top of the fifth. Kahaulelio doubled to left-center with one out and scored the tying run when Rodriguez tripled to right-center. Ziegler gave Wichita a 4-3 lead with a sacrifice fly to right. Clevlen followed with a line drive home run to straightaway center field that cleared Cohen Stadium's 20-foot fence.

El Paso scored four times in the bottom of the sixth. Gabriel Suarez doubled home the tying runs on a line drive to left-center. Devin Thout and Garcia added RBI singles in the inning to give the Diablos their second lead of the night.

Lincoln Holdzkom took the loss for Wichita. Marshall Schuler earned the win for El Paso.

Junior Guerra took a no-decision for the Wingnuts, allowing six earned runs on eight hits in five-plus innings. Guerra walked three and struck out three.

Carlos Teller started for El Paso and also took a no-decision. Teller allowed five earned runs on eight hits in four and two-thirds. Teller walked three and struck out four.

Andrew Aizenstadt worked two scoreless relief innings for Wichita. Kahaulelio finished with four hits, while Rodriguez had three RBI. All nine of Wichita's starters reached base at least once.
