T-Birds Skate Past Chiefs in Overtime

SPOKANE, October 10, 2014 - The Seattle Thunderbirds defeated the Spokane Chiefs 2-1 in overtime Friday at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena.

Mathew Barzal tied the game 1-1 with just 2:02 left in the game with a power-play goal and Jared Hauf scored the game winner 1:20 into overtime.

The T-Birds travel to Portland to face the Winterhawks on Saturday at the Moda Center at 7pm.

Seattle outshot Spokane 9-5 in a scoreless first period.

Spokane (2-1-2-0) went in front 1-0 at 17:31 of the second period. Dominic Zwerger beat Seattle goalie Taran Kozun with a wrist shot from the slot. Riley Whittingham and Jason Fram had the assists.

The Chiefs outshot the T-Birds 9-6 in the second period. The T-Birds had a 15-14 advantage in shots after two periods.

Seattle (3-3-0-0) tied the game 1-1 at 17:58 of the third period on a power-play goal from Barzal. Ethan Bear had the puck at the left point. He passed the puck to Justin Hickman at the top of the left circle. Hickman took a wrist shot that Spokane goalie Garret Hughson stopped, but the rebound came right to Barzal to the right of the goal. Barzal slammed the puck past a lunging Hughson to tie the game.

The T-Birds won the game when Hauf scored 1:20 into overtime. Florian Baltram brought the puck out from behind the Spokane net at the left post. Hughson was moving to his left tracking Baltram when the puck slid into the bottom of the left circle. Hauf was following the play, go the puck and put it high over Hughson who was trying to get back to make a save. Scott Eansor had the second assist.

Seattle outshot Spokane 11-6 in the third period and 28-20 in the game.

Kozun stopped 19 of 20 shots and his record is now 3-2-0-0.

Hughson made 26 saves on 28 shots and his record is now 2-1-2-0.

The T-Birds and Chiefs meet Tuesday, October 14, at ShoWare Center at 7:05pm. This is the first Directors Mortgage 2-for-Tuesday of the season. Tickets to the game are two-for-one and there are $2 concession specials on beer, popcorn, hot dogs and soda.

T-Birds single game tickets for the 2014-15 season are available online at the T-Birds website and at the ShoWare Center box office. The ShoWare Center Box Office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday game days at 10 a.m. and Sunday game days at noon.
