Spokane Chiefs News Release
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs fell in overtime to the Seattle Thunderbirds on Friday night, 2-1, behind a game-winning goal from T-Birds' defenseman Jared Hauf. Dominic Zwerger scored the Chiefs' only goal.
Penalties were the story early as both teams earned 5-on-3 opportunities but couldn't capitalize. An interference penalty to Tyson Helgesen and delay of game to Garret Hughson earned the T-Birds one minute of 5-on-3 time split between the end of the 1st and beginning of the 2nd Periods. Seattle's Calvin Spencer and Hauf would both go off, for high sticking and interference, respectively, to give Spokane just under a minute and a half with the two man advantage.
Defense would continue to win the battle until Zwerger broke through with a wrist shot to beat T-Birds' goaltender Taran Kozun over his left shoulder at the 17:31 mark of the 2nd Period. Assists went to Riley Whittingham and Jason Fram as the Chiefs took a 1-0 lead into the 2nd Intermission.
The 3rd Period would remain a 1-0 Chiefs advantage until T-Birds forward Mathew Barzal put a power play goal by Garret Hughson with just 2:02 remaining. Seattle was playing 6-on-4 as Kozun came out of his net on the power play.
Hauf's game-winner, snapped from the slot just under the crossbar, was the only shot in overtime, scored at the 1:20 mark.
The Chiefs finished the game 0 for 2 on the power play and 4 for 5 on the penalty kill. Hughson, who stopped 26 of 28 Seattle shots, earned 3rd Star honors while Kozun earned 2nd and Hauf earned 1st.
Spokane faces Seattle twice again next week, visiting the ShoWare Center in Kent on Tuesday and returning home on TicketsWest Player Magnet Giveaway Night at Spokane Arena on Wednesday.
Tickets for Wednesday and all Chiefs home games are available in-person at the Chiefs' Ticket Office, over the phone at (509) 535-PUCK or (800) 325-SEAT, via TicketsWest outlets and online at www.ticketswest.com.
