
T-Birds Drop First of Two Games Against Utah

Orem, UT - The Utah Flash (22-15) had six players score in double figures in a 106-88 victory over the New Mexico Thunderbirds (15-24) on Friday night.
In the first quarter, the T-Birds opened up an early nine point lead on a Shane Edwards alley-oop from Walter Sharpe. With the T-Birds still up by five and 4:20 to go, Utah closed the first quarter on a 16-5 run to take a 32-26 lead.
The Flash continued their run into the second quarter, scoring eight of the first 11 points to extend the lead to 40-29. The Thunderbirds answered with an 11-3 run, capped by a Jamine Peterson 3-pointer to cut the lead down to 43-40. Tony Gaffney finished the half with a game high 13 points for Utah and the Flash led 60-50 at the break.
Utah started the third quarter on a 9-2 run to open up a 17 point lead. They would lead by as many as 21 points in the quarter and held an 82-68 lead going into the fourth.
J.R. Giddens started the fourth quarter by hitting a couple of jump shots in a row to get the Thunderbirds within 11 points. Utah answered with a quick 7-2 run to pull away from the T-Birds for good.
Giddens finished the game with 19 points for the T-Birds.
The T-Birds and Flash will play again tomorrow at 7 p.m. The team will then return home to continue March Giveaway Madness on Friday, March 11th at Susan G. Komen for the Cure Night, sponsored by Presbyterian Hospital. The first 500 fans in the doors will receive a free Thundercat sticker. Presbyterian Hospital will be presenting a $1000 check to the Susan G. Komen fund. There will also be a silent auction for autographed pink basketballs with 100% of the proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen fund.
On Saturday, March 12th, the Thunderbirds will be hosting Hispanic Heritage Night, presented by Univision and Premier Distributing Company. The T-Birds will be donating a portion of every ticket purchased to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. The night will include a postgame concert featuring the National Institute of Flamenco, Kymberlee Ann Lopez and local sister singing act, SORELA. All fans will also have the opportunity to win Lakers tickets, a Taos Ski Valley Vacation, an Angel Fire Deluxe Ski Vacation and a VIP Package to the Ty Murray Invitational.
