Syracuse Wins as Strasburg Improves to 3-0

Rochester, N.Y. - In game two of a doubleheader the Syracuse Chiefs, the triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, beat the Rochester Red Wings 5-1 on Wednesday night. The victory gave the Chiefs two wins on the day after they had won game one by an 8-5 final. Syracuse has now won three games in a row.

Stephen Strasburg (3-0) pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings for the Chiefs and gave up just three hits while striking out a season high nine batters. In 18 1/3 innings at the triple-A level, Strasburg has now allowed just four base hits while striking out twenty two batters. Jesse English pitched 2.1 innings of relief allowing the only Rochester run. Joel Peralta earned a save retiring one batter in the bottom of the ninth.

Syracuse (23-15) got to Rochester starter Ryan Mullins (3-3) early on in the ballgame. Josh Whitesell, who had a three-for-three day, came around to score in the second on a Carlos Maldonado sacrifice fly. Syracuse scored again in the third on a Whitesell RBI single. Two more runs came across in the fourth to make it 4-0 Syracuse. The last run of the day for the Chiefs was on another Maldonado sacrifice fly in the fifth to score Kevin Mench. After five innings, Syracuse led 5-0.

The lone Rochester (15-25) run came across in the seventh on a Brock Peterson solo home run. It was Peterson's sixth home run of the season, and second of the day. He also hit a solo home run in game one of the doubleheader.

Syracuse and Rochester will play game three of the four game series on Thursday night at Frontier Field. Jeff Mandel will make his second start of 2010 for the Chiefs and Glen Perkins (0-5, 10.08) will take the mound for the Red Wings. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
