Columbus Takes Down G-Braves, 12-9

The Lead: The Columbus Clippers defeated the Gwinnett Braves 12-9 on Wednesday night at Coolray Field. Braves starting pitcher Tim Gustafson gave up 7 R/ER on 8 hits in his 4.2 innings of work. Gwinnett (18-21) remains in second place in the International League South and 4 games behind Durham. Columbus (25-16) sits in first place in the IL West and 2 games ahead of Toledo.

It Was Over When: In the top of the 7th inning with the score favoring the Clippers 8-6, G-Braves reliever Jeff Lyman loaded the bases and a single off of Cristhian Martinez allowed 2 runs to score for the Clippers.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Gustafson (3-2) struck out 2 batters. Lyman allowed 2 R/ER on 3 hits in 1.1 IP.

At the plate: Left fielder Matt Young (4-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 R) hit his second home run of the year in the 3rd inning. First baseman Freddie Freeman went 3-for-5 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: Starter Yohan Pino (5-2) earned the win, striking out 3 in 5 innings. Jensen Lewis earned his first save of the season.

At the plate: Right fielder Chris Gimenez went 4-for-5 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.

On Deck: Gwinnett faces off against Columbus in game three of a four-game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at Coolray Field. G-Braves RHP Chris Resop (4-1, 1.90 ERA) is scheduled to face RHP Carlos Carrasco (2-2, 4.08 ERA) of the Clippers.
