Chiefs Win Game One Of Doubleheader In Rochester

Rochester, N.Y. - In game one of a day-night doubleheader on Wednesday the Syracuse Chiefs, the triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, beat the Rochester Red Wings 8-5. The Chiefs relied on a six-inning start from Matt Chico (1-0) and a five run second inning.

Syracuse (22-15) started the scoring in the second inning on an RBI single from Chase Lambin. That scored Josh Whitesell, who had led off the frame with a double, to make it 1-0 Syracuse. With Lambin on base, Chris Duncan hit his fifth home run of the season to put Syracuse on top 3-0. Pete Orr then walked and Eric Bruntlett doubled him home. Devin Ivany continued a string of six straight batters to reach base by hitting an RBI single to score Bruntlett and put the Chiefs in the lead 5-0.

In the fourth, Rochester (15-24) put two runs up on a two run double for Danny Valencia. The Red Wings would score again in the fifth on a solo home run from Wilson Ramos, his fourth of the season. The Chiefs got one run in the top of that inning and after five, Syracuse was on top 6-2.

The Red Wings hit solo home runs in the fifth ,sixth, and seventh innings. The home run in the sixth was hit by Trevor Plouffe and in the seventh, Brock Peterson hit his sixth home run of the season.

The last scoring for Syracuse came in the seventh on a two RBI double from Chase Lambin to score Justin Maxwell and Kevin Mench. Lambin rinished the day with two doubles and three RBI.

The starter for Rochester, 21 year old Deolis Guerra (0-1) threw six innings and allowed six runs on nine hits while striking out four.

In game two of the doubleheader, the Chiefs will send Stephen Strasburg (2-0, 0.00) to the mound and the Red Wings will counter with lefty Ryan Mullins (3-2, 4.50). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 from Frontier Field.
