Syracuse Crunch Sign Defenseman Joey Mormina to AHL Contract

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse Crunch have signed defenseman Joey Mormina to an American Hockey League contract for the 2015-16 season, Crunch general manager Julien BriseBois announced today.

Mormina, 33, appeared in 54 games with the Crunch during the 2014-15 season, notching 19 points (4g, 15a) along with 70 penalty minutes. He was also named the Crunch U.S. Army Defender of the Month in January and February. Over his two seasons with Syracuse, the 6-foot-6, 229-pound alternate captain has skated in 110 games and posted 32 points (7g, 25a) and 156 penalty minutes.

During his 620 career AHL games with Manchester, Albany, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Adirondack and Syracuse, the Montreal, Quebec native has tallied 145 points (31g, 114a) with 777 penalty minutes and a plus-38 rating. Additionally, Mormina has appeared in 69 Calder Cup playoff games.

Mormina made his National Hockey League debut with the Carolina Hurricanes on Feb. 14, 2008, against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Prior to his professional career, Mormina spent four seasons at Colgate University from 2001 to 2005. In 141 contests, he accumulated 56 points (16g, 40a) and 156 penalty minutes.

Mormina was selected in the sixth round, 193rd overall, by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
