January 15, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Syracuse Crunch News Release
Syracuse, NY -The Syracuse Crunch and ESPN Radio 97.7 FM & 1200 AM, Syracuse; 100.1 FM & 1440 AM, Oswego are bringing Hockey Hall of Fame defenseman and Stanley Cup champion Brian Leetch to Syracuse when the Crunch host the Springfield Falcons on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.
"What an honor it is to have a player of Brian Leetch's magnitude join us in Syracuse," said Crunch owner Howard Dolgon. "He is a three-time Olympian, two-time Norris Trophy winner, Conn Smyth recipient and Stanley Cup Champion. Leetch is arguably the greatest American born player in the history of the sport."
Leetch will participate in a ceremonial puck drop and be available for autographs during the first intermission.
Leetch spent 18 seasons in the National Hockey League from 1987-2006. Sixteen of the 18 seasons were with the New York Rangers, one season with the Toronto Maple Leafs and one season with the Boston Bruins. In his 1,205 NHL games, the defenseman accumulated 1,028 points (247g, 781a). Leetch was selected in the 1st round, 9th overall, by the Rangers in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft.
Throughout his 18 seasons in the NHL, Leetch was highly honored as a stand out defenseman. Along with winning the Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers in 1994, Leetch became the first American-born winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Playoff MVP. He is a two-time Norris Trophy recipient as the NHL's best defensemen for the 1991-92 and 1996-97 season. Leetch was awarded the Calder Trophy for being the league's outstanding rookie after scoring 23 goals for the Rangers in 1989. The record still stands as the most goals by a rookie defenseman in a single season. Leetch was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009.
