Dayton Dragons News Release

Davenport, IA - The Dayton Dragons had dropped the first two games in the four game series at John O'Donnell Stadium against the Swing of the Quad Cities but appeared to be on track to win its first game of the series taking a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning. After recording the first out of the inning, the next seven hitters in a row reached base and the Swing stunned the Dragons with four in the bottom of the ninth for a 6-5 come from behind win.

While the first inning was uneventful, the top half of the second inning was anything but. With one down, Dayton center fielder Drew Stubbs hit his first home run of the season away from Fifth Third Field onto the lawn in right center field for a 1-0 Dragons advantage. Jason Louwsma was the next hitter for Dayton and the first pitch from Swing starter Clayton Mortensen (LP, 0-1) sailed behind the back of the right handed hitter and the pitcher was thrown out of the game by home plate umpire Philip Henry. Chuckie Fick (ND) came in out of the pen and retired the side getting a double play ground ball from Carson Kainer.

The Dragons extended the lead for Webb with a three spot in the top half of the fourth jumping in front 4-0. With two down, Logan Parker unloaded on a Fick delivery for a solo homer over the wall in right center for a 2-0 Dayton advantage. Stubbs was up next and reached on an error by Swing shortstop Carlos Marmol. Louwsma kept the inning alive with a single to center field. Fick shot himself in the foot with a wild pitch that advanced both runners up 90 feet. Kainer gapped a single to left center scoring both runners and the lead grew to 4-0.

Travis Webb (ND) made the lead stand up through the first four innings. Quad Cities got on the board against Webb in the bottom of the fifth as the southpaw tried to get through the frame to qualify for the win. Webb gave up a pair of runs as the Swing loaded the bases with one down pair of singles and a walk. Tony Cruz knocked home two runs with a single to right to cut the lead to 4-2. Webb was lifted and replaced by Marcos Mateo (WP 3-3) who stuck out Steven Hill and Christian Reyes with runners at first and second to get out of the inning.

Dayton second baseman Billy Rojo picked up his second RBI of the series driving home Zack Cozart to lead off the inning with a double and move to third on a grounder to first. The Rojo single over a drawn in infield gave the Dragons a three run lead at 5-2.

Quad Cities wasn't done and battled back to pick up the win with four in the bottom of the ninth inning off Mateo and Kevin Gunter (LP, 0-2). Dayton got the first out of the inning with an easy looper on the infield to Parker at first base, it would be the only out the Dragons would get in the inning. Mateo walked Jaime Landin and gave up a double to Cruz, who drove home his third run of the night to make it 5-3. Gunter replaced Mateo and before it was over allowed the next five in a row to reach base. Hill picked up an infield single to put runners on the corners. Reyes was next up and singled to left scoring Cruz to make it 5-4. Derba tied the game at 5-5 with an RBI double. After an intentional walk to load the bases, Jose Ramirez got down the suicide squeeze bunt scoring pinch runner Daryl Jones from third and Quad Cities picked up the come from behind win.

The Dragons and Swing wrap up the four game series Friday night from John O' Donnell Stadium with an 8:00 PM first pitch. 1410 ESPN Radio will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons Pre Game Show at 7:30 PM. All Dragons games in 2007 are also streamed live on the internet at www.daytondragons.com via All In Broadcasting.
