Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars' knocked off the Lansing Lugnuts, 3-2, Thursday night in front of 5,503 at Elfstrom Stadium. Alex Valdez had two hits, including the game-winning RBI, and Scott Deal and Travis Banwart handled the mound work as the Cougars won their third in a row and sixth straight at home; they also claimed their ninth win in the last 10 games and 14th in the last 17. The Cougars' 8-1 August record is the best in the Midwest League.

Valdez doubled off Graham Godfrey with two outs in the fourth, and Sean Doolittle doubled him to make it 1-0. Then in the fifth Josh Horton smoked a one-out double and later scored on a two-out single by Todd Johnson for a 2-0 score.

Meanwhile Deal was cruising through the Lugnuts' order. He had a four-hit shutout through seven before trouble in the eighth ended his night. Lansing put two men on base with two outs, Deal left and Banwart (1-0) came in and allowed a double to Jonathan Jaspe that tied the game, 2-2.

But the Cougars, who can do no worse in the series than win three out of four, responded in the bottom of the eighth against Edward Rodriguez (3-2). Mike Massaro walked, took second on Jermaine Mitchell's sacrifice bunt and scored on a Valdez single to center for a 3-2 count that became the final.

Deal gave up two runs on six hits, walked three and struck out three in 7 2/3 innings, and Banwart picked up his first professional win with 1 1/3 innings of three-hit, no-walk relief. The Cougars (24-21) go for the sweep Friday night at 6:30 CT when James Heuser (9-6), who's posted consecutive quality starts, faces Kyle Ginley (5-5).
