Lansing Lugnuts News Release
Geneva, Ill. - Three late-inning runs lifted the Kane County Cougars past the Lansing Lugnuts 3-0 Wednesday night at Elfstrom Stadium. The loss marks the eighth straight for the Lugnuts in Kane County, a place where they have not won since May 28th, 2005.
Each starting pitcher traded zeros throughout their starts, as Lansing's Nate Starner nor Kane County's Trevor Cahill allowed a run. Each man gave up just three hits in five and six innings respectively before turning the game over to the bullpens.
The game stayed scoreless until the bottom of the seventh when Lugnuts' reliever Po-Husan Keng found himself in trouble. He loaded the bases with one out before Josh Horton delivered a single to left that plated Sean Doolittle to put the Cougars ahead 1-0.
Kane County put the game away in the next frame when Alex Valdez's double drove home Jermaine Mitchell to make it 2-0. Valdez would score on a Doolittle single to extend the lead to 3-0.
Derrick Gordon (3-2) got the win in relief for the Cougars, as he allowed just one walk while fanning five over 2 1/3 scoreless innings.
Keng (1-5) took the loss for Lansing, as he surrendered all three Cougar runs on five hits in two innings.
Sam Demel notched his first save for the Cougars by retiring the game's final two batters.
Lansing (61-53, 26-19) and Kane County (47-66, 23-21) will continue the series Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m.
