Darwin Barney Delivers as Chiefs Win 5-4

Peoria, IL- The Chiefs used their last at bat to pick up a win for the second straight night as they defeated the visiting Great Lakes Loons 5-4 at O'Brien Field on Thursday night. The win improves the Chiefs to 26-20 on the half and 57-58 on the half and keeps them in the Wild Card spot by 2.5 games over Kane County who lost. With the game tied 4-4, the Chiefs got back-to-back singles from Ryne Malone and Nate Samson with one out in the ninth inning off Loons closer Miguel Ramirez. Darwin Barney hit a grounder to short and Malone scored from second when shortstop Francisco Lizaragga's throw bounced past first and off the camera well. Barney was credited with his third hit of the game on the play as the Chiefs won on a throwing error for the second straight game. With the game scoreless, the Chiefs took advantage of a pair of mistakes by Loons starter Josh Wall in the third inning. Wall hit Malone to start the inning committed a balk that moved Malone into scoring position. Leon Johnson lined a single through the left side of the infield to put runners on the corners with one out. After a walk to Jim Adduci to load the bases Blake Lalli delivered a two-run, two-out double off the right field wall to put the Chiefs up 2-0. Marco Carrillo could not hold the lead for the Chiefs in the fourth inning. Carrillo walked Matt Berezay to start the inning and Eduardo Perez followed with a single. Josh Bell tripled over the head of Johnson in center field to score both Berezay and Perez to tie the game 2-2. Peoria's defense gave Great Lakes their first lead of the game in the fifth inning. Trayvon Robinson reached on a throwing error by catcher Wellington Castillo to start the inning and Carrillo issued a walk to Berezay to put two runners on. Perez followed with a single to load the bases for Josh Bell with two outs. Bell hit a grounder to Darwin Barney at shortstop but his throw was too low to first and got by Lalli to bring in two runs to make it 4-2 Loons. The Chiefs did not waste any time climbing right back into the game in the bottom of the fifth. After a two out double by Johnson, Barney bounced back from making an error in the previous inning to hit his first professional home run, a two run shot to left to tie the game 4-4. Marco Carrillo worked five innings and allowed four runs, two of which were earned. The 20 year old allowed three hits while striking out six and walking a season high five batters. Jayson Ruhlman tossed three shutout innings and allowed just one hit while striking out a pair. Alex Maestri pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his fifth win of the season.

Gorman's Pub Player of the Game Darwin Barney (SS)- Barney hit his first professional homer in the 5th inning to tie the game 4-4. He singled in the ninth as the Chiefs scored the winning run on an error following the basehit. He also singled and stole a base in the first inning to finish 3-for-5 with two RBI.
