Charlotte Knights News Release

FORT MILL, S.C. - The International League announced today that Charlotte Knights outfielder Ryan Sweeney has been named the League's Batter-of-the-Week for April 24-30. Sweeney is the club's first player to win an International League weekly award in 2006.

Sweeney, 21, has picked up right where he left off last season, hitting safely in all six games he played in over the last week. During that period he had five multi-hit performances, scoring ten runs to lead the IL.

Sweeney, who is rated as the third best prospect in the White Sox organization overall by Baseball America, has played all three outfield positions for the Knights, but it has been his offensive talents that have helped him become the IL Batter-of-the-week. From April 24-27, he had two hits each game, going 8-14 with two doubles. His best performance came over the weekend in Buffalo, when he hit his first homer of the season, leading to a 3-RBI ballgame.

On Sunday Sweeney went 3-5 with a RBI and four runs scored on the way to another Charlotte victory. That performance topped an amazing week for Sweeney in which he hit .522 and scored 10 runs, while averaging a slugging percentage of .739. His offensive efforts have played a tremendous role in helping the Knights win 11 of its last 12 games, placing them atop the IL South with the best record in Triple-A Baseball (19-6).

Sweeney, who was a 2nd round draft choice of the White Sox in 2003, is currently in his third season within the organization. He has quickly advanced through the Chicago farm system, making it to Charlotte in his third full season as a pro. Sweeney has a career .294 batting average with 10 HR and 122 RBI in 276 Minor League games.
