LAST TIME OUT

MOOSIC, PA (August 14, 2022) - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (58-52) defeated the Worcester Red Sox 6-5 on Sunday afternoon to clinch a series victory. Oswaldo Cabrera finished the game 3-for-4 with two triples and his eighth home run of the season.

For just the second time in this set, the RailRiders took the game's first lead with three in the opening frame. Cabrera tripled home two to get the scoring started. Ben Rortvedt then brought Cabrera in one batter later with a run-scoring groundout to make it 3-0 early. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre padded the lead in the second via Blake Perkins' first career Triple-A home run. Perkins was 3-for-13 at the plate with that blast and a walk in his first week of action with SWB. Worcester then cut their four-run deficit in half in the third after a two-RBI single off the bat of Enmanuel Valdez. The RailRiders got one run back in the bottom of the inning. Cabrera smacked his eighth home run of the year to right as the lead grew to 5-2. Rob Brantly hit an RBI single to right in the fifth to add one more tally to the advantage. Brantly was 5-for-14 at the plate in the series with four runs driven in. Worcester scored three runs between the seventh and eighth frames to make things interesting. Connor Wong hit his second big fly of the series to make it 6-4 Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Pedro Castellanos then contributed a run-scoring double in the eighth to bring the Red Sox within one.

However, Greg Weissert shut the door on a RailRiders victory with a clean ninth in the 6-5 final. Weissert has fired 21 consecutive scoreless innings dating back to June 10. Matt Krook (8-7) earned his team-leading eighth win of the campaign for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Greg Weissert (16) notched his 16th save. Victor Santos (0-2) dropped the decision for Worcester.

NEWS & NOTES

FIRST THINGS FIRST - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders are on the road to face the St. Paul Saints for the first time in franchise history at CHS Field. The Saints are just the third team from the International League West that the RailRiders see this year (Toledo Mud Hens and Louisville Bats).

TOO CLOSE, SOME COMFORT - In the six-game set against Worcester last week, four games finished with the winner taking the game by three runs or less. This season, the RailRiders have played in 64 games that finished with a three-run margin of victory, going 35-29 in those games.

CLARKE'S SUMMIT - Clarke Schmidt was named International League Pitcher of the Week after tossing six perfect innings with a career-high eleven strikeouts on Thursday, August 11 against Worcester. He's the second RailRider to be given the honor this year. Matt Krook lasted 7.2 perfect innings against Buffalo on July 1, taking the award on July 3 (Estevan Florial won Player of the Week that same week).

ARMANDO'S AUGUST - Armando Alvarez went hitless on Sunday, ending his eight-game hitting streak (season-best). He has gone 11-for-35 (.315) with six doubles since August third. He has a hit in every game played in the month of August save Sunday. Dating back to July 17, Alvarez has tallied a hit in 12 of his last 14 games played.

WIZARD OF OS - Since returning from a right shoulder injury on July 12, Oswaldo Cabrera is 31-for-92 (.337) with seven homers, 23 RBI and 11 walks in 24 games. He tripled twice on Sunday, becoming the first RailRider since 2017 to do so (Billy McKinney). Cabrera enters today with an official 18-game on-base and a six-game hit streak. If you include a rain-suspended game on August 7, that on-base streak is 19 which would be the longest for any RailRider this year. He has hits in ten of eleven games played in August and is slashing .400/.457/.600 this month.

MÁN OF THE HOUR - Ronald Guzmán has a hit in 14 of his last 17 games dating back to July 8. In this stretch, he's gone 22-for-60 (.367) with eight doubles and four home runs. He has raised his average from .197 to .240 and his OBP from .314 to .347 but hasn't played since Wednesday (day-to-day).

ANOTHER DAY WEISSERT - Greg Weissert has not been charged with a run in 20 straight appearances, the longest stretch for any RailRiders pitcher this season. This scoreless streak has lasted 21.0 innings.

BANGED UP - Through their twelve-game homestand the last two weeks, the RailRiders suffered eight injuries of varying degrees. Estevan Florial missed two games but returned Friday. Oswald Peraza missed a game but returned Wednesday. Chris Owings was removed from a game on August 4 and missed two games before returning on the seventh. Jake Bauers was placed on the 7-Day injured list on August 8. Josh Breaux was placed on the 7-Day injured list on August 10. Both Michael Beltre and Ronald Guzmán have been day-to-day since Thursday. Tyler Wade was lifted in the sixth inning on Friday.

THIS IS FINE - On Friday, Worcester tallied 14 runs on 16 hits against SWB. Fourteen runs matched a season-high for any RailRiders' opponent this season (April 15, 14-7 loss to Norfolk). Sixteen hits came one shy of matching a season-high for a RailRiders' opponent this year. The WooSox also tallied five home runs, season-highs for both their offense and SWB's pitching staff.

AY BAY BAY -On Thursday, August 11, Chris Owings played one inning before being removed from the game as his wife Brittany went into labor with their second child Bella (born on Chris' birthday 8/12). Before the same game on the eleventh, Braden Bristo also left the team for the same reason as his wife Morgan went into labor. These two come after Max McDowell and his wife Emily celebrated the birth of their child back in July.

ON DECK - The RailRiders head out on the road for two weeks on Monday and won't be home again until August 30 to host the Syracuse Mets for their third to final homestand of the season.

AROUND THE ORGANIZATION - The New York Yankees (72-44) lost 4-0 to the Tampa Bay Rays last night. Gerrit Cole allowed one run over six innings of work. The Yankees tallied seven hits, but only one extra-base hit (Anthony Rizzo double). Nestor Cortes faces Jeffrey Springs at 7:05 PM EST tonight... The Somerset Patriots (66-41) handled the Hartford Yard Goats 10-1 in the Sunday finale. Elijah Dunham hit a grand slam. He was named Eastern League Player of the Week. It was the first time in his career that he was given the honor. He enters Tuesday with a career-best 12-game hitting streak. The Patriots send Clayton Beeter to the mound against Bowie tonight at 6:35 PM EST... The Hudson Valley Renegades (57-50) lost 6-5 to Aberdeen Sunday. Grant Richardson homered twice. Yoendrys Gómez takes on the Brooklyn Cyclones tonight at 7:00 PM EST... The Tampa Tarpons (51-55) were shut out 5-0 in the finale against the Dunedin Blue Jays Sunday. They host the Bradenton Marauders tonight at 6:30 PM EST...
