Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - The Charlotte Knights fell short in Tuesday's opener to the Syracuse Mets by a score of 9-8 in the opening game of a six-game series from Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte.
Charlotte catcher Carlos Pérez had a strong day at the plate and behind the plate for the Knights. Pérez launched his team-leading 17th home run of the season and had two RBIs to help pace the Charlotte offense. He also threw two runners out attempting to steal second base. For the season, Pérez has set new career highs in home runs (17) and RBIs (60).
The Knights scored first in Tuesday's game, adding a run in each of the first two innings, but struggled to hold the lead in the third inning. RHP Davis Martin (3-4, 5.23) started for the Knights and was charged with the loss after he allowed seven runs (three earned) - all in the third inning. The inning was highlighted by two Syracuse home runs. Travis Blankenhorn and Mark Vientos both went yard for the Mets in the inning.
Martin pitched just 2.2 innings for the Knights and was saddled with his fourth loss of the season. The Charlotte bullpen was solid the rest of the way, holding the Mets to just two runs over the final 6.1 innings.
In addition to Pérez, the Knights received solid offensive performances from center fielder Mark Payton (1-for-3 with two RBIs), third baseman Zach Remillard (2-for-2 with three runs scored) and first baseman Laz Rivera (2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs). In all, the Knights recorded nine hits on the night in the game one loss.
The Knights will continue the six-game home series against the Syracuse Mets (Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets) from Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte on Wednesday night. First pitch on Wednesday is set for 6:35 p.m. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad and long-time Knights broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call for all of the action on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte and www.CharlotteKnights.com.
