Iowa Cubs News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Iowa Cubs (51-61) earned their first win of the year when scoring three or less runs on Tuesday, beating the Indianapolis Indians (54-56) by a score of 2-1 at Victory Field.
Frank Schwindel gave Iowa an early 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the first inning, nearly all the support the I-Cubs would need. In his third game with Iowa on Major League rehab, Wade Miley spun five innings of two-hit ball.
He allowed one unearned run in the third inning on an RBI single by Diego Castillo but aside from that, the southpaw held the Indians off the board. With the game tied 1-1, each team's bullpen's took over, keeping the game tied through seven innings.
Iowa got 2.2 scoreless innings from Luke Farrell while Indianapolis used two relievers to cover five innings and get to the eighth. The I-Cubs broke the 1-1 tie in the top of that inning, when Greg Deichmann knocked an RBI single to bring in the go-ahead run.
Up 2-1, Brendon Little and Nicholas Padilla each threw 0.2 innings to record the final four outs and give Iowa a one-game lead in the series.
POSTGAME NOTES:
- Narciso Crook went 2-for-4 with a double out of the six-hole tonight, the only player for either team to record a multi-hit game.
- Luke Farrell spun 2.2 scoreless innings of relief for Iowa today to earn his third win of the season. It marked his sixth relief appearance of the year with Iowa.
- Tonight marked the first time Iowa has won a game all year when they score three runs or less. They were 0-25 when scoring three runs or less entering tonight's game.
- Nicholas Padilla earned his third save of the year and his first with Iowa, getting one at all three levels he has pitched at this season. With the save, he is now 6-for-11 in career save opportunities.
Iowa and Indianapolis will play game two of their six-game series tomorrow, with first pitch set for 12:35 pm CT from Victory Field. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
