Louisville Bats News Release

LOUISVILLE, KY- The Louisville Bats (47-65) claimed game one of a six game series with the Omaha Storm Chasers (52-59) on Tuesday night at Louisville Slugger Field.

Omaha jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first, scattering five hits in the inning, including a leadoff homer from left fielder Drew Waters, a 420 foot shot that landed on the back canopy of the Humana Cabana.

Louisville shaved a run off the Omaha lead in the home half of the first when first baseman Colin Moran brought home Lorenzo Cedrola with a sacrifice fly, narrowing the deficit to 3-1.

Louisville third baseman Cristian Santana scratched another run for the Bats in the third, launching his fifth home run of the season into the left center field seats at the top of the grassy berm. Santana carried that momentum onto the defensive side of the ball in the top of the fourth, making a tremendous back hand snag and jump-throw from foul ground to complete one of the more impressive infield defensive plays by Louisville this season.

In the bottom of the sixth, Stuart Fairchild and Juniel Querecuto each drew a walk to start the inning. Following a mid-inning pitching change for Omaha, the Bats exploded offensively, plating five runs in the inning led by a 2-RBI double by Isiah Gilliam and a 3-RBI double from Cristian Santana. Santana finished the evening going 2-for-4 with a walk, a double, a homer, 4 RBIs and a pair of runs scored.

Following his rocky start in the first, Louisville starter Randy Wynne (5-10, 4.99) settled in nicely for the rest of the contest, earning his sixth quality start of the season. In fact, after allowing three runs on five hits in the opening frame, he held the Storm Chasers scoreless and surrendered just two more hits to finish with 6.1 innings, seven hits, three runs, a walk, three strikeouts and a home run.

Colin Moran scratched the run column again for Louisville in the seventh, leading off the inning with a solo homer to right center field for his seventh of the year. Bats backstop Chuckie Robinson tallied his first hit of the ball game in the seventh, an RBI-double of his own to push the Louisville lead to 9-3.

Louisville outfielder Stuart Fairchild was the final Bat to join the hit parade in the eighth inning, notching a 2-RBI double to give the Bats their final 11-3 advantage.

Relievers Eddy Demurias and Ryan Hendrix finished the game with scoreless appearances, completing the feat of blanking the Storm Chasers for the remainder of the game after the opening frame.

Game two of the six game series is scheduled for tomorrow (August 17) at Louisville Slugger Field with first pitch slated for 6:35 p.m. Lefty Brandon Williamson (1-3, 4.02) will be on the bump for the Bats while right-hander Max Castillo (2-0, 1.74) will get the nod for the Storm Chasers.
