ABOUT SUNDAY: A four-run third and three additional multi-run innings by the Memphis offense defeated the Indians on Sunday afternoon at AutoZone Park, 11-2. With the loss, the two teams split the six-game set and the 12-game season series. Following an RBI bloop single in the third inning off the bat of Cal Mitchell, Memphis countered with four runs in the bottom half. The inning was highlighted by a home run off the bat of Moises Gomez, his ninth in Triple-A this season. The Indians cut the deficit to two runs courtesy of a solo, one-out home run by Diego Castillo in the sixth. It was his first of two extra-base hits on the day, and he led the Indians offense with its lone multi-hit performance. The Redbirds offense tagged four out of five Indians pitchers with at least one run, following Castillo's home run with three consecutive frames of two-or-more runs scored. Meanwhile, the Indians were held to just three baserunners in their final three offensive innings.
CASTILLO CRUSHED IT: Diego Castillo went 2-for-3 with a double and his second Triple-A home run of the season on Sunday afternoon for his second consecutive multi-hit game and his fifth in his last 10 games with Indianapolis. He has hit safely in his last five with a .450 average (9-for-20) with four runs scored. In 13 games with Indianapolis since being optioned by Pittsburgh, he has hit safely in 10 games with a .314 average (16-for-51) with a .846 OPS. One year after launching a career-high 19 home runs between Double-A Somerset, Double-A Altoona and Indianapolis, Castillo has 12 longballs in 2022 (10 with Pittsburgh).
MITCHELL KEEPS HITTING: With an RBI single in the top of the third inning on Sunday, Cal Mitchell extended his hitting streak to a season-high tying 11 games, which is also tied for the longest active hitting streak in the International League. During that span, he is hitting .325 (13-for-40) with five extra-base hits, seven RBI, five runs scored and a .911 OPS. Mitchell's first 11-game hitting streak of the season also sandwiched a stint with Pittsburgh from May 17-July 4. The outfielder has hit safely in 41 of 51 games with Indianapolis this season, good for a .323 average (61-for-189), 38 RBI and .878 OPS.
LEADING THE LEAGUE: The Indians continue to pace the International League with 34 triples, eight more than any of their counterparts. They narrowly trail Albuquerque (38) and Oklahoma City (35) for the most three-baggers in Triple-A this season. It is also the most triples the Indians have had in a single season since they led the International League with 40 three-baggers in 2016.
TODAY: The Indians return to Victory Field today to begin a 12-game homestand with a six-game series vs. Iowa. The Indians and I-Cubs have faced off 12 times already this season, with Indianapolis holding the advantage 8-4. The two teams faced off from July 4-10 at Victory Field, with Indianapolis winning the series 4-2, including a 5-4 walk-off win on the Fourth of July. Since 1988, the Indians lead the series, 110-82 with a 63-38 record in Indianapolis. To begin the six-game set, former Cardinals farmhand Johan Oviedo will take the mound for his third appearance (second start) in an Indians uniform. The right-hander has made one start against Iowa in his career (May 28, 2022) and took a no decision after surrendering five earned runs in 5.1 innings with eight strikeouts. Countering for Iowa will be major league rehabber Wade Miley, who has never faced Indianapolis in his career.
OVIEDO ON THE MOUND: Johan Oviedo, who was traded to Pittsburgh as part of a package that sent Jose Quintana and former Indianapolis Indian Chris Stratton to St. Louis on Aug. 2, will make his Victory Field debut tonight vs. Iowa. He made his first Pirates organization start on last Friday at Memphis and tossed 2.0 hitless innings to kickstart Indianapolis sixth shutout of the season. In two outings with Indianapolis, Oviedo has surrendered one hit in 3.0 scoreless innings. Prior to being traded, he split the season between Memphis (as a starter) and St. Louis (as a reliever). In 14 appearances (one start) in the big leagues, he went 2-1 with a 3.20 ERA (9er/25.1ip) and 26 strikeouts. That comes in stark contrast to his minor league starting numbers as he went 4-2 with a 5.58 ERA (31er/50.0ip) and 51 strikeouts in 10 starts with Memphis. Oviedo was in the big leagues at the time of the trade and had not given up multiple runs in an outing since June 4 (2) at Chicago (NL).
SERIES-OPENING SPLITS: Last Tuesday at Memphis was the first time since June 14 at Gwinnett that the Indians lost the first game of a six-game series. On Tuesday nights, they are 11-6 with a record of 12-7 in Game 1 of a series. The Indians are above .500 in the first, fourth (12-6) and sixth (10-4) game of a series, with Tuesday and Sunday (11-6) marking their best days of the week. Last season, the Indians finished above .500 on Tuesdays (11-9), Fridays (14-8), and Saturdays (12-8), and Game 1 (12-10), Game 5 (14-7) and Game 7 (1-0).
THIS DAY IN 1969: Bill Short and John Noriega tossed back-to-back two-hit shutouts in a twinbill vs. Denver to sweep by scores of 3-0 and 11-0. Each pitcher surrendered just two hits and fanned six in their respective 7.0-inning outings. Offensively, home runs were the name of the game, with Clyde Mashore launching a solo homer in the opener to give Indianapolis the lead. In the nightcap, Mine de le Hoz hit a grand slam during an eight-run first inning and Clarence Jones belted a pair of homers.
