LAST TIME OUT: SYRACUSE, N.Y. (June 16, 2018) -The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders topped the Syracuse Chiefs 9-7 in 11 innings at NBT Bank Stadium on Saturday night. After building a 6-0 advantage, the RailRiders scored twice in the 11th to secure the series win with one game to go Sunday while sending the Chiefs to their eighth straight loss.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre scored three runs on four hits in each of the first two innings. In the first, Clint Frazier walked and Tyler Wade singled off Syracuse starter Logan Darnell. Brandon Drury singled in Frazier for a 1-0 edge. Billy McKinney singled in Wade and Abiatal Avelino drove in Drury with a base hit for a 3-0 advantage.
In the second with two down, Fraizer and Wade each singled. Drury singled home Frazier again for a 4-0 lead and Ryan McBroom followed with a two-run double to extend the lead to 6-0. However, the Chiefs rallied and ultimately tied it 7-7 in the bottom of the 8th.
After a scoreless ninth and tenth, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre regained the lead in the 11th. Wade tripled in Bruce Caldwell for an 8-7 lead and scored on a McBroom sacrifice fly to extend the advantage.
Hale pitched five and two-thirds with one walk and one strikeout while Darnell allowed six runs on nine hits over five innings in his Syracuse debut. Carroll was charged with a blown save, his second of the year.
Raynel Espinal (3-1) pitched three innings, striking out five for the win. Carlos Torres (1-1) took the loss after allowing the final two runs over two innings of work.
GETTING CLOSER: Sunday marks Game No. 68 of the season for SWB and it was the first time they had been as high as 3rd place in the division since Game No. 26, May 3 vs. Pawtucket. Heading into that ballgame they were in T-3rd place and 2.0 games behind the division-leading Lehigh Valley IronPigs. They are currently 5.5 games out of first place and alone in 3rd place in the division following Saturday's win over the Syracuse Chiefs.
ANGLING FOR A SWEEP: The RailRiders are looking to cap off a four-game sweep for the first time this season as they take on the Syracuse Chiefs. For the second straight series SWB has taken the first three games from its opponent -- doing so earlier in the week against the Rochester Red Wings before dropping the series finale 4-3. The lone sweep of the season so far for Scranton was a three-game sweep May 15 - May 17 against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs at PNC Field. The RailRiders are also going for a fourth straight win, which they have not done at any point this season -- last sweeping a four-game series July 13-16, 2017 @ Buffalo, the first series after the All-Star Break. The last time the RailRiders Won 4+ games in a row at any point was August 4-9 last season which was a 6-game win streak.
McBROOM WITH LITTLE McROOM TO IMPROVE: It has been quite the week for RailRiders INF/OF Ryan McBroom. He set the SWB season-high with 5H in Friday's 14-2 win. It was actually the third career game for McBroom with 5+ hits, both of which came in 2015 with the Lansing Lugnuts when he was a member of the Toronto Blue Jays organization -- including a 6-for-6 night 7/12/15 @ Dayton. McBroom makes a push for this week's International League Player of the Week as the RailRiders play into the weekend having gone 15-for-30 with 5 R, 2 HR and 13 RBI since play began Monday.
CAN'T STOP, WON'T STOP: The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders set new season-highs in runs and hits Friday night against Syracuse. The 14 runs were their most in a game since a 15-8 win @ Charlotte July 28 last season. In that game, the team scored 15 times on 14 hits, including 4 HR. Meanwhile Friday, the team notched 20 hits including 5 HR which included a 2-HR game from OF Mark Payton. Since the 10th inning Thursday, SWB's offense has scored 20 runs on 25 hits (25-for-52, .481 AVG) in the last 10 innings.
