Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs scored four runs, utilizing two home runs to beat the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, 4-2, on a gorgeous Father's Day on Sunday afternoon at NBT Bank Stadium in front of a crowd of 5,546.
Syracuse (29-38) trailed, 2-1, entering the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out in the frame, Tuffy Gosewisch worked a walk. Two batters later, Andrew Stevenson also walked to put runners on first and second base. Matt Reynolds then crushed a ball over the left-field wall for a three-run home run that put Syracuse in front, 4-2.
The Chiefs scored the game's first run with one powerful bat swing in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out and nobody on base, José Marmolejos hammered a pitch well over the right-center-field wall for a home run that gave the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (33-35) tied the game and took the lead in the top of the sixth. With one out, Brandon Drury doubled. Two batters later, Billy McKinney doubled down the right-field line, scoring Drury to knot the game up, 1-1. Tyler Austin followed with a double to left field that brought home McKinney to give the RailRiders a 2-1 advantage.
Syracuse starting pitcher Tommy Milone made one of his best starts of the season. The left-hander threw five and two-thirds innings and tied a season high with nine strikeouts. Milone held the RailRiders scoreless through five frames before allowing two runs in the sixth. The 31-year-old allowed just one walk and five hits. Chiefs relievers Christopher Smith, Trevor Gott, Josh Edgin, and Jimmy Cordero combined to hold Scranton/Wilkes-Barre scoreless over the game's last three and one-third innings with five strikeouts.
The Chiefs have an off day on Monday before beginning a six-day road trip on Tuesday. Syracuse starts its time on the road with a three-game series in Rochester against the Red Wings. RHP John Simms will start for the Chiefs on Tuesday night while LHP Dietrich Enns will be on the mound for the Red Wings. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
