IL1 Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders

SWB Game Notes

September 1, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders earned their second consecutive IL North championship with a 6-1 victory over the Bisons at Coca-Cola Field. SWB has claimed the North 11 times in its history including seven division titles in a decade as the Yankees' top minor-league affiliate. The RailRiders have won nine straight in Buffalo and 13 of 14 against the Bisons overall.

ROAD WARRIORS: The 2016 RailRiders finished their road schedule a franchise-record 47-25 (.653), breaking the mark of 45 wins set by the 2002 Red Barons. At 47-21 (.691), only the PCL's Nashville Sounds (Oakland Athletics) have a better road record in Triple-A.

SWING AND A MISS: SWB pitching picked up nine strikeouts last night for a franchise-record 1,161 in 2016. That breaks the mark of 1,157 set by the 2013 unit.

THE COKE SIDE OF LIFE: Phil Coke (5-3) earned the win with a quality start. The southpaw limited Buffalo to a run on seven hits across six innings. He walked two and struck out six. In his 11 SWB starts he has gone 4-2 with a 1.46 ERA and .230 BAA. He has allowed one earned run or less in all but one of those 11 nods.

THE 'PEN IS MIGHTIER: With two perfect frames by Tyler Webb and a scoreless inning by Johnny Barbato, the SWB bullpen has not allowed a run in 20 consecutive stanzas. They have compiled 36 strikeouts in that span.

CLASSICAL GAS: Mason Williams finished 3-for-5 with an RBI. Williams is 7-for-14 (.500) over his last three games played with two doubles and six RBIs. Since he came off the DL in mid-August, Williams has gone 23-for-66 slashing .348/.380/.439/.820 with 13 RBIs in 16 games played.

SOL MAN: Donovan Solano went 1-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. His 158 hits on the season lead the IL with former SWB Yankee/current Bison Jesus Montero in second at 154. Solano could become the second SWB player to lead the IL in hits in the Yankees era, joining Jose Pirela who paced the circuit with 163 in 2014. Solano stands 18 hits shy of the SWB single-season record of 176 set by Marlon Anderson in 1998. His 117 singles stand five shy of the SWB record set by David Doster with 122 in 2002. Solano led the IL in August in batting average (.413); slugging (.606) and OPS (1.035).

RING THE BELL: The RailRiders will host Game Three of the Governors' Cup semifinals against the wild-card entry on Sept. 9 at 6:35 p.m. If necessary, they will also be home for Game Four on Sept. 10 at 6:35 p.m. and Game Five on Sept. 11 at 1:05 p.m. The RailRiders will face either Lehigh Valley or Rochester. Those two teams face each other over their final four games of the regular season. Lehigh Valley would secure the playoff spot with a win in any of those games.

FTW!: The RailRiders' 87 wins make for SWB's highest total since the 2010 then-SWB Yankees took the IL North with 87. The 2008 team set the Yankees-era record with 88 wins and the divisional crown. Even with a cancelled contest that lessened the RailRiders' 2016 schedule to 143 games, the team is on pace to win 90 games. No IL club has won 90+ games since the then-SWB Red Barons won a franchise-record 91 affairs in 2002. The RailRiders boast Triple-A's best record and stand tied with Double-A Reading for the most wins in baseball.

TIME TO MAKE THE DONUTS: The RailRiders' 24 shutout wins pace the minors and continue to redefine the single-season franchise record. The 2009 SWB Yankees previously held the franchise record with 16 blankings. Only one IL team, the 2015 Rochester Red Wings (21), is believed to have recorded as many as 21 shutouts since the then-Tidewater Tides had 21 in 1975. Fort Myers (Twins) and Jupiter (Marlins), both of the pitcher-friendly Adv.-A Florida State League, share runner-up status in MiLB this season with 19 shutouts apiece.

OFF THE RAILS: Chris Parmelee opened last night's scoring in the second inning with a solo homer to left...The shot was his 10th with SWB and second of the road trip...The RailRiders stranded a season-high-tying 14 men on base in the win...It matched the mark set on July 6 in a 10-0 blowout of the Bisons at PNC Field...The RailRiders have lost once, by one run, over their last 14 meetings with Buffalo going back to early May...The Short Season A Staten Island Yankees are bidding to become the Yankees' fifth minor league team in the playoffs this season...The SI Yanks lead the NY-Penn League wild-card chase by 2.0 games and have a magic number of three.
