SWB Game Notes

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders walloped the Buffalo Bisons at Coca-Cola Field on Wednesday night, 14-2. The RailRiders have won eight straight in Buffalo and 12 of 13 against the Bisons overall.

JORDAN RULES: Jordan Montgomery (5-1) hurled 5.1 scoreless frames to establish a new club record for consecutive scoreless innings. His 29.2 frames surpassed Tim Mauser's run from May 15 - June 1, 1991. Montgomery's final line included two runs on six hits, no walks and three strikeouts over six innings. Matt Dominguez ended Montgomery's scoreless-innings streak with a bases-loaded, two-run single in the sixth. The runs were the first for Buffalo in 36.1 innings against SWB, going back to the opener of a July 26 doubleheader at PNC Field. Including his Double-A time, Montgomery ranks among the best in the full-season minors in wins (T-3rd, 14) and ERA (12th, 2.13).

BULLISH 'PEN: Richard Bleier held the Bisons scoreless over the final three stanzas for his first save with SWB. SWB relievers have held opponents scoreless for 17 straight innings while striking out 33 in that span.

SOL MAN: Donovan Solano went 4-for-5 and equaled franchise marks for a single game with three doubles and five runs scored. His 157 hits on the season lead the IL with former SWB Yankee/current Bison Jesus Montero in second at 151. Solano could become the second SWB player to lead the IL in hits in the Yankees era, joining Jose Pirela who paced the circuit with 163 in 2014. Solano stands 19 hits shy of the SWB single-season record of 176 set by Marlon Anderson in 1998. His 116 singles stand six shy of the SWB record set by David Doster with 122 in 2002. His 31 doubles rank eight short of Chase Utley's club record of 39, also in 2002. Solano's .413 batting average led the IL in August. Gwinnett's Emilio Bonifacio finished in second at .376. Thanks to 10 doubles, a triple and three homers, Solano also led the IL in slugging (.606) and OPS (1.035) in August.

GETTIN' HIGGY WITH IT: Kyle Higashioka mashed his 10th homer with SWB in the fifth off reliever Chad Girodo. The ninth-year pro entered 2016 as a .233 career hitter, slugging .354. Between Double-A Trenton and SWB this year, he has hit a composite .287 and slugged .533 with 23 doubles and 21 homers in 97 games and 395 plate appearances.

ON THE VERGE: SWB has a magic number of one to win the division. An SWB win or a Lehigh Valley loss at Rochester would sew up a share of the divisional title. The RailRiders would then win the tiebreaker for the division champ's home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs based on head-to-head record. It's a magic number of two to win the division outright. A Lehigh Valley win tonight would secure a playoff spot for the 'Pigs, who would be the RailRiders' first-round playoff opponent.

FTW!: The RailRiders' 86 wins make for SWB's highest total since the 2010 then-SWB Yankees took the IL North with 87. The 2008 team set the Yankees-era record with 88 wins and the divisional crown. Even with a cancelled contest that lessened the RailRiders' 2016 schedule to 143 games, the team is on pace to win 89 games. No IL club has won 90+ games since the then-SWB Red Barons won a franchise-record 91 affairs in 2002. The RailRiders boast Triple-A's best record and trail only Double-A Reading (87) for the most wins in baseball.

TIME TO MAKE THE DONUTS: The RailRiders' 24 shutout wins pace the minors and continue to redefine the single-season franchise record. The 2009 SWB Yankees previously held the franchise record with 16 blankings. Only one IL team, the 2015 Rochester Red Wings (21), is believed to have recorded as many as 21 shutouts since the then-Tidewater Tides had 21 in 1975. Fort Myers (Twins) and Jupiter (Marlins), both of the pitcher-friendly Adv.-A Florida State League, share runner-up status in MiLB this season with 19 shutouts apiece.

OFF THE RAILS: A day after earning IL MVP, Ben Gamel was traded by the Yankees to the Seattle Mariners... The RailRiders' 18 hits, 12-run margin of victory and four double plays turned all matched season-high marks...SWB had four hitters finish with three or more hits, including: Solano, Higashioka, Jake Cave and Cito Culver...The Short Season A Staten Island Yankees are bidding to become the Yankees' fifth minor league team in the playoffs this season...The SI Yanks lead the NY-Penn League wild-card chase by 2.5 games and have a magic number of three...All four full-season teams on the farm will be in their respective playoffs (AAA SWB, AA Trenton, A+ Tampa, A Charleston).
