Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
CIRCLE-CITY WOES: The RailRiders dropped their series opener to the Indians at Victory Field on Friday night, 5-1. The RailRiders lost for the first time in four meetings with the Indians this season. Indy has won four of its last five, all against first-place teams.
RARE AIR: Before Josh Bell's fourth-inning homer, starter Dietrich Enns had only surrendered two big flies over 127.2 innings since the close of the 2013 season. Enns (1-1) lost despite a quality start. He gave up two runs, the first earned runs he has allowed at Triple-A, on four hits and two walks over six innings.
FOR PETE'S SAKE: Pete Kozma doubled and scored on a 2-for-3 night. He has hit safely in seven straight and has gone 13-for-37 over his last 12 games. His Friday efforts lifted his average over the Mendoza line for the first time in 2016.
SET, SPIKE...NO SCORE: The RailRiders put their leadoff man on in the second (double), fifth (walk) and eighth (double), but failed to score in each of those innings. They finished the game 1-for-9 with men in scoring position.
HE'S BACK: Conor Mullee made his first Triple-A appearance in 10 days. The right-hander, who made his big-league debut on Monday, stranded an inherited runner by getting former big leaguer Ed Easley to ground out and end the eighth. Only two of Mullee's eight hand-me-down men have come around to score.
BELL'S BLAST: In addition to his homer, Indy's Josh Bell doubled, singled and in total scored three runs as he fell a triple shy of the cycle. Bell, who entered the game in .172 (5-for-29, 11K) funk, had not posted multiple extra-base hits in a game since he delivered the IL's lone cycle on the season April 22 at Louisville. SWB's Ramon Flores assembled the circuit's only cycle of last season, turning the trick on Opening Night 2015 versus Syracuse. Flores has spent the 2016 season with the Milwaukee Brewers. In 36 games played, he has slashed .190/.293/.228/.521.
MAY DAY: Ben Gamel went hitless for a second straight game. After hitting .321 in 20 April games, he has gone 7-for-45 (.156) in 11 Triple-A games played this month. Aaron Judge singled home the RailRiders' lone run for his team-best 24th RBI. However, he has 2-for-17 on the road trip. After hitting .287 in 21 April games, Judge has gone 14-for-69 (.203) in 18 May contests.
BACK ON TRACK: Gary Sanchez entered Thursday's game in a 1-for-11 funk since his one-game stay with the big club. He finished that finale in Louisville 3-for-5 with his IL-best 12th double and two runs scored. With Sanchez behind the plate, the team has gone 18-11 with a 2.68 ERA. Would-be base stealers have been nabbed 50% of the time with him catching, tying him for second in the IL. He also ranks among the IL's best in slugging percentage (5th, .512) and extra-base hits (T-3rd, 18). He got last night off, but is in tonight's lineup.
TRIPLE THREAT: Jake Cave has five triples in 36 games played this season between Double-A and Triple-A, tying him for eighth in MiLB. Only super prospect Jorge Mateo, whose seven triples with Advanced-A Tampa have him tied for second in the minors, has more among Yankees' farmhands. Former RailRider Rob Segedin, now with the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate in Oklahoma City, is among the four tied for fourth with six triples after collecting another one yesterday.
CHECKING THE LEADERBOARD: SWB ranks among the IL's best offensively in runs per game (3rd, 4.14), doubles (1st, 77), home runs (4th, 31), RBIs (3rd, 165), hit batters (2nd, 18) and sac flies (1st, 18). The club's offense also ranks on the lower end in walks (2nd-fewest, 117) and sacrifices (2nd-fewest, 2). The team's pitching staff boasts positive numbers in ERA (2nd, 2.96), WHIP (3rd, 1.224), H/9IP (2nd-fewest, 7.9), K (2nd, 340) and K/9IP (3rd, 8.2),
OFF THE RAILS: The SWB franchise has not won a series at Victory Field since taking three of four from May 18-21, 2010...A steady rain fell through more than half of Friday's game, prompting a slight delay for mound repair during the home eighth...The paid attendance of 10,287 made for the biggest crowd to see the RailRiders play this season...Donovan Solano hit third for the second time this season...Adding in Mullee's efforts from last night, only 11 of the SWB bullpen's 44 (25%) inherited runners have come around to score this season.
