Defensive Miscues Undo Indianapolis, 7-3
May 21, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - A third-inning infield error with two outs set the table for a three-run double by Scranton's Gary Sanchez, handing the RailRiders the lead for good on Saturday at Victory Field.
The Indians committed four errors on the day, their largest total of the year. The result was six unearned runs that proved to be the difference in the contest.
The matchup pitted the International League's top two ERA owners against one another.
Chad Kuhl (3-1) took the loss for allowing one earned run, four total, over six innings of work. His ERA mark inched up to just 0.99 following the outing.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's Chad Green (3-3) earned the win for two earned runs and seven strikeouts in six innings.
Indianapolis (21-20) put up a pair of second-inning runs. Danny Ortiz wrapped his fourth home run of the year around the right field foul pole to open the frame, while Jacob Stallings singled and later scored on a knock from Adam Frazier.
Frazier's RBI single extended his hitting streak to a team-best 13 games.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (25-19) reversed the lead after the Indians defense left the door open in the third inning. Kuhl induced a two-out ground ball to Ngoepe at short, who flipped to second base. Alen Hanson's foot couldn't find the bag on the play and he was assessed an error as the bases were loaded before being cleared on a double by Gary Sanchez.
Another run would cross for the RailRiders in the fourth on an RBI single from former Indian Deibinson Romero, and in the seventh on yet another two-out error by the Tribe. The final blow came in a two-run eighth for the visitors to make the total 7-2.
Max Moroff homered to lead off the ninth, but that would be all for the home club as it fell 7-3.
The series finale will take place on Sunday at 1:35 p.m. back at Victory Field. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
