Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs dropped the third game of a four-game series with the Norfolk Tides Saturday, 7-2. Syracuse looks for a series win Sunday afternoon.
Neither Norfolk (15-29) nor Syracuse (22-19) could push a run across until the sixth inning. Syracuse starter Austin Voth had been cruising to that point, but he allowed a leadoff walk to Xavier Avery. Tides designated hitter L.J. Hoes then roped a single to left, which Mike Yastrzemski followed with a single of his own, loading the bases with nobody out. Next, Trey Mancini ripped a grounder to short, which Trea Turner fumbled for an error, allowing the game's first run to score and all Tides runners to advance safely. The ensuing batter, Dariel Alvarez, drove a double to the gap in right-center, clearing the bases and giving Norfolk a 4-0 lead. Erik Davis replaced Voth after the hit, and allowed his first inherited runner of the season to score when Corban Joseph singled to center improving the Tides' lead to 5-0.
The Tides tacked on another run in the eighth inning off of Syracuse reliever Abel De Los Santos. Audry Perez led off the inning with a double, which Joseph followed with a single, placing Norfolk runners on the corners. Sharlon Schoop then matched Joseph with a single of his own, plating Perez for a 6-0 lead.
Syracuse eventually got on the scoreboard in the eighth inning. With one out, Matt Skole singled to left. A wild pitch from Norfolk reliever Edgar Olmos moved Skole to second before Sizemore drove a double down the left-field line, scoring Skole and cutting the lead to 6-1. The next batter, Jason Martinson, pushed Sizemore to third on a groundout. Caleb Ramsey was then walked, and Olmos was replaced by Pedro Beato on the mound. With Jhonatan Solano at the plate, Perez allowed a passed ball which brought home Sizemore and moved the score to 6-2.
Norfolk tacked on an insurance run in the ninth. With two outs, Alvarez ripped his second double of the day down the left-field line. Perez followed up the hit with a single which drove in Alvarez for the 7-2 lead.
Norfolk starter Odrisamer Despaigne earned his first win of the season in six and two-thirds innings of work. He allowed eight hits, all singles, while striking out seven Chiefs and walking none.
Syracuse and Norfolk wrap up their four-game stand Sunday afternoon. Aaron Laffey is penciled in to start for the Chiefs opposite Joe Gunkel for the Tides. First pitch is set for 1:05.
