Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders bashed two home runs in the first inning and stormed by the Red Wings, 13-3, in a rain-shortened affair on Friday night. The game was mired by a benches-clearing incident in the opening stanza. After Rob Refsnyder and Kyle Roller bashed back-to-back home runs for a 4-0 lead, starter Lester Oliveros drilled catcher Austin Romine in the head and was immediately ejected. Both benches and bullpens emptied before order was restored.

PIRELA POP: Jose Pirela went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored in his first game back from the big leagues. Including his four-game rehab stint from April 30-May 3, he has gone 14-for-24 with SWB for slashes of .583/.600/.917/1.517. Last night he played the outfield for the first time since he suffered a concussion following a head-long crash into the wall as the Yankees' center fielder during a Mar. 22 spring training game against the Mets. His last outfield play in a regular season game came Aug. 27, 2014 versus Buffalo.

GETTIN' FIGGY WITH IT: Cole Figueroa went 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Since his 0-for-3 day dropped his average to .184 on May 11 at Norfolk, he has gone 39-for-100 in a span of 26 games played. He has led the league with all four slashes over that time: .390/.440/.570/1.010.

HIGH NOONAN: Nick Noonan posted a pair of hits and a walk. He has dominated in the month of June, going 17-for-38 (.447/.500/.632/1.132) with five extra-base hits and eight RBIs in 10 games played. His June average and OBP lead the IL while his OPS ranks 2nd and his SLG 3rd.

#WINNING: The RailRiders have won five straight and 10 of 11. They stand a season-best nine games above .500. The SWB franchise has not stood that tall since the 2012 IL North champion SWB Yankees finished the year at 84-60.

TROUBLE AT HOME: The RailRiders stand three games below .500 at PNC Field (16-19) and 12 games over on the road (20-8). The team has hit .282 on the road compared to a .258 mark at home. On the road, SWB has scored 144 runs in 28 games (5.1/game). At home, the squad has plated 133 runs in 35 games (3.8/game). The pitching has performed better on the road (3.26 ERA) than in Moosic (3.35 ERA). No IL team has a better road winning percentage than the RailRiders (.714), who have won 13 of 14 away from PNC Field.

TURN THE BEAT AROUND: Despite the season-long numbers, the RailRiders have trended better at home of late. They have won a season-best four straight games at PNC Field. That has not happened since the 2014 squad won four straight in Moosic from July 31-Aug. 3.

HOMER SIR, SECTOR 7G: Mason Williams went 4-for-12 during the Buffalo series with a double and three RBIs. Yesterday, he homered in his Major League debut, a two-run shot off Ubaldo Jimenez in his second plate appearance. He departed SWB with hits in six straight games, going 9-for-22 (.409) with three walks (.480 OBP). After five-plus pro seasons and 443 games played below the Triple-A level, he spent three weeks and 20 games played with SWB before getting the call to the Bronx.

OFF THE RAILS: Ben Gamel snapped an 0-for-15 slide with a single in the first inning as part of a 2-for-4 night with a walk and two runs scored...SWB amassed a season-best 13 runs on a season-high 18 hits...It marked the most runs for the RailRiders since a 13-0 defeat of Syracuse on Aug. 2, 2014 at PNC Field and the highest hit total since an 18-hit showing in a 12-4 win at Gwinnett on July 23, 2014...Through two games this series, Kyle Roller has gone 5-for-10 with two extra-base hits and five RBIs...Of his team-high 34 RBIs, 11 have come in 11 games played this month alone.
