Charlotte Knights News Release
(BUFFALO, NY) -- Caleb Gindl's three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning led the Buffalo Bisons past the Charlotte Knights by a score of 5-4 on Saturday in game three of the four-game series from Coca-Cola Field in Buffalo, NY.
The Knights cruised to the bottom of the seventh inning with a 4-2 lead and handed the ball to right-handed reliever Maikel Cleto (2-1, 2.53), who had his troubles. After striking out Melky Mesa for the first out of the inning, Cleto walked the next two batters - Jonathan Diaz and former Knights infielder/outfielder Steve Tolleson. With two on and just one out, Gindl changed the game with one swing of the bat.
Gindl, who was homerless over his first 38 games of the season, slugged a 1-2 pitch over the right field wall for his first home run of the season. That home run -- his first since July 18, 2014 -- proved to be the game-winner.
Charlotte starter Chris Beck allowed two runs on three hits over four innings and did not factor in the decision. Beck walked three batters and struck-out four in his first start since June 3.
Terance Marin, who last pitched on June 8 as a starter against the PawSox, relieved Beck and tossed two solid innings. Marin, who spun six shutout innings on June 8, did not allow a run in his two frames on Saturday - extending his scoreless innings streak to eight with Charlotte.
Charlotte reliever Zach Phillips also extended his scoreless innings streak on Saturday. Phillips, who did not allow a run over the final 1.2 innings, has not allowed a run over his last eight games (9.0 innings pitched). He lowered his ERA to 1.95 on the season.
Micah Johnson went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI for Charlotte in the loss - the team's fourth-straight. Matt Tuiasosopo added two hits - giving him 950 over his Minor League Baseball career. Leury Garcia added to his stolen base total -swiping his team-high 23rd of the season.
Buffalo starter Daniel Norris gave up four runs (two earned) on seven hits over four innings of work. Buffalo's bullpen was sharp - combining on five scoreless innings. Chad Jenkins (4-2, 2.72) struck-out three Charlotte batters over three shutout innings for the victory. Todd Redmond notched his first save of the season after going the final two innings.
The two teams will conclude their four-game series on Sunday with a 1:05 p.m. matinee from Coca-Cola Field. Charlotte RHP Kyle Drabek will make the start against his former team. Pre-game radio coverage starts at 12:50 p.m. on ESPN 730 AM and www.charlotteknights.com. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action.
