Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The Hens' took the field at McCoy Stadium Saturday night, looking to earn their first win of the season against the Pawtucket Red Sox (0-6) , but the cards once again were not in their favor. Toledo right hander Derek Hankins took his 1-1 season record to the mound poised to bounce back after his last start in which he only went 2.0 innings. However, it would be the the Hens bullpen who was left with the fate of the game in their hands, and Pawtucket capitalized for the second straight night off of Toledo relievers.
Scoring got started early on the clear muggy night in Pawtucket, RI. For the Mud Hens a bases loaded threat in the first gave way to a Jefry Marte RBI single bringing around Xavier Avery and taking a 1-0 lead. What could have been a two run lead on the play was for not as Red Sox left fielder Quintin Berry threw a perfect strike home to nab Dixon Machado at the plate on a bang bang play. In the bottom half, Hens' starter Derek Hankins surrendered a two out double to Pawtucket's Travis Shaw, who came around to score on a Bryce Brentz single that followed to knot the score at one a piece.
In the bottom of the fifth it was Jefry Marte again coming through with runners in scoring position, as he brought home Dixon Machado and Daniel Fields on a ringing two RBI double off of Red Sox starter Brian Johnson. Over his last two games, Marte is hitting at an unprecedented clip going 4 for 8 with 6 RBI. The third baseman continues to add to his team leading RBI total which sits at 39.
Toledo carried a 5-4 lead into the 7th and gave way to their newest bullpen arm, Angel Nesbitt who was optioned from Detroit after last night's game. The right hander was hit hard in his first outing as he was tagged with the loss, throwing just 0.1 innings and allowing 3 runs on 4 hits with 1 BB. Brad Johnson picked up his seventh win for Pawtucket .
The two teams are back in action in the final game of the season series tomorrow at 1:05pm in Pawtucket. Toledo will send lefty Mike Belfiore (2-7) to the hill, looking to salvage the last game against the Red Sox before heading to Syracuse. Detroit Tigers slugger Victor Martinez will be joining the club on Sunday for a four game rehab assignment. Martinez was placed on the DL on May 19 with left knee inflammation.
