Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: A night that almost didn't happen saw the skies clear and rain stall just in time for 40-man member Manny Banuelos to take the hill for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. Banuelos, making his first appearance for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre since May of 2012, spun five innings of one-run ball and scattered two hits while striking out four en route to a 6-1 win over the Louisville Bats.
BRING OUT THE BATS: The RailRiders offense combined for 12 hits last night against Louisville, including extra-base hits by Kyle Roller, Taylor Dugas, Zelous Wheeler and Rob Segedin. The 12 hits in last night's game marked the fourth time in five meetings that the RailRiders have recorded at least 10 knocks against Louisville pitching. In the five games between the two clubs, the RailRiders have out-hit the bats (86-61), while out-scoring Louisville 47-32, with a batting average against of .361 with 27 extra-base hits.
ON A ROLL: Kyle Roller continued his recent run of success with a 2-for-3 night that saw the RailRiders' slugger collect two more extra-base hits. In 11 games this month, he has hit .366 (15-for-41) with four doubles, five homers and 11 RBIs. He is tied for the 12th-most homers in all of minor league baseball, but his five home runs this month tie him for the most in Triple-A and ranks third in all of minor league baseball.
R&R: Rob Refsnyder went 2-for-4 with a walk and two strikeouts last night. Since the turn of the calendar to the month of August, Refsnyder has regained his form. He slumped in July, going 28-for-107 with a triple slash line of .262/.342/.421. While the power numbers were up, the contact clip dipped more than .100 points from his average in June. August has seen Refsnyder go 14-for-44 (.318/.367/.455) with four extra-base hits and five RBI in 11 games played. He currently rides a four-game hit streak, that has seen him club his first home run (Aug. 11 vs LOU) since July 23 vs. Gwinnett.
SLUMP BUSTER: IL All-Star Jose Pirela went 1-for-3 with a two-run triple in the sixth inning of Tuesday night's 6-1 win. His IL-leading eighth triple of the season snapped a 0-for-22 skid that saw Pirela go hitless in five-straight games, the longest stretch this season the first-year Triple-A player has gone without a hit. The slump caused his contact clip to dip from .312 to .301, the lowest it has been since May 31 when he went 0-for-4 against Indianapolis at Victory Field.
GOING BOWLING: Earlier today the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders announced the formation of the "RailRiders Bowl" at PNC Field. Starting this fall, the RailRiders summer home will host a new autumnal classic. The first version of the RailRiders Bowl in 2014 and 2015 will sport the annual rivalry game between Abington Heights and Valley View High School. The inaugural contest will take place at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4. Abington Heights will be the home team in 2014, while Valley View owns home team status in the 2015 match-up.
STANDING IN THE HALL OF FAME: Earlier this season, veteran skipper Dave Miley was inducted into the International League Hall of Fame. Tonight, SWB alumnus Jeff Manto becomes the third and final member of this year's class to be inducted. Manto joins Miley and Toledo Mud Hens broadcaster, Jim Weber, among the three inductees this season. Manto, who played for the then-Red Barons, appeared in an SWB uniform during the 1993 campaign. Signed as a minor league free agent after the 1992 season, Manto hit .289 with 17 home runs and 88 RBI in his lone season in SWB. He also appeared in eight games for the 1993 National League champion Phillies.
