Knights Fall Just Short in 8-6 Loss to Chiefs

(SYRACUSE, NY) - The Charlotte Knights scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning on a Matt Davidson three-run home run and brought the tying run to first base in the ninth. Still, despite some late-inning heroics, Charlotte's rally fell just short on Wednesday.
Scott McGregor threw seven impressive innings, Eury Perez had a game-high three hits, and the first place Syracuse Chiefs beat the Charlotte Knights 8-6 on Wednesday in game three of their four-game series from NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse, NY. McGregor (1-0, 3.46) gave up three runs on eight hits en route to his first win with the Chiefs. The Middletown, OH native walked just one batter and struck-out five.
Charlotte starter Chien-Ming Wang (11-8, 4.22) allowed seven on nine hits over five innings and was charged with the loss. Wang gave up a run in four of his five innings, including one in the first, two in the second, two in the fourth, and two in the fifth.
Davidson led the way offensively for the Knights with the three-run home run in the eighth inning. The home run was his 19th of the season, which is good for fourth in the International League behind teammates Andy Wilkins (28) and Josh Phegley (21). Mike Hessman is second with 22 this season. Overall, Davidson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, the home run, and three RBIs. White Sox outfielder Avisail Garcia appeared in his 12th rehab game with the Knights and went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. He's batting .370 on the rehab assignment.
Carlos Sanchez continued his red-hot hitting. The Venezuelan native extended his hit-streak to 10 games with an RBI single in the second inning. He finished the night 2-for-4 with an RBI. Wilkins went 2-for-3 and bumped his batting average up to .302 on the season.
Despite allowing two hits in the ninth, Syracuse reliever Rafael Martin held on for his fifth save of the season. Syracuse has now won two of the three games in the series.
Charlotte will look to split the series with a win on Thursday as the two teams will conclude their series with a 7:00 p.m. game from NBT Bank Stadium. RHP Chris Beck (1-2, 3.57) gets the start against Syracuse RHP Blake Treinen (8-1, 3.13). Pre-game radio coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on ESPN Radio 730 AM, and WRHI (94.3 FM and 1340 AM).
