Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - For the second time in the series, the Pawtucket Red Sox (70-55) let a lead to slip away in the eighth inning, but scored in the ninth to take the contest from the Gwinnett Braves (55-69). An RBI double by Blake Swihart drove in the winning run in a 4-3 final on Wednesday night at Coolray Field.
Despite dropping game three of the series, Gwinnett enjoyed an early 1-0 lead. Todd Cunningham belted a 0-1 pitch from left-hander Edwin Escobar over the left field fence for a solo home run. His seventh blast of the season was the first leadoff homer by a G-Brave since Jose Constanza accomplished the feat on June 7, 2011 vs. Toledo pitcher L.J. Gagnier.
Pawtucket tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning. Derrik Gibson was hit by a pitch from right-hander Aaron Northcraft and advanced to third base on a single to right by Mookie Betts. Gibson then scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Hassan.
Cunningham was back at it in the bottom of the third inning. After a leadoff double by Joe Leonard, he laced an RBI double to give the G-Braves a 2-1 lead.
Pawtucket answered with a run of their own in the top of the fourth. Travis Shaw doubled, moved to third on a single by Garin Cecchini and scored on a groundout by Deven Marrero.
The Red Sox added a run in eighth inning against Northcraft to take a 3-2 lead. Gibson walked, stole second base and moved to third on a fly-out. After issuing a walk to Hassan, Northcraft was lifted in favor of Chasen Shreve. The left-hander got Bryce Brentz to fly out, but the ball was deep enough to score Gibson for a Pawtucket lead.
Gwinnett tied it in the bottom of the eighth inning. Cunningham collected his third hit of the game with a bunt single off left-hander Ryan Verdugo. He advanced to third on a two-out single by Joey Terdoslavich and scored on an RBI single by Sean Kazmar. Verdugo recovered to strike out Brandon Boggs, keeping the game tied at 3-3.
Pawtucket regained the lead in the top of the ninth. Ryan Lavarnway drew a leadoff walk from Shreve, and pinch-runner Mike McCoy moved to second on a bunt by Cecchini. Swihart's double down the left field line scored McCoy for the decisive run.
Shreve (L, 0-1) suffered his first Triple-A loss, allowing one run on one hit over 1.2 innings. He got the G-Braves out of an eighth inning jam, but could not keep the Red Sox off the board in the ninth. Northcraft pitched well for Gwinnett, tossing a Triple-A career high 7.1 innings. He allowed three runs on three hits, walked three and struck out four for his second quality start of the season.
Escobar gave up two runs on five hits over 7.0 innings in the start for Pawtucket. Verdugo (W, 2-1) was the victor in relief, working 2.0 innings with one run on three hits.
Cunningham finished a triple shy of the cycle for Gwinnett, going 3-for-4 with a double, homer and two RBIs. Kazmar went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Pawtucket had just four hits on the night. Swihart finished 1-for-4 with a double and the game-winning RBI.
The Gwinnett Braves and Pawtucket Red Sox finish the four-game series at Coolray Field on Thursday night, first pitch scheduled for 6:35 PM. Right-hander Kanekoa Texeira (3-3, 4.59) will start for the G-Braves, while the Red Sox will counter with right-hander Matt Barnes (5-8, 4.36).
