New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats fell to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats by the score of 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at New Britain Stadium.
Both of Sunday's starters swapped scoreless frames until the top of the fifth when CF Dalton Pompey drove a single up the middle with runners on first and third. The outfield sent RHP Bryan Evans' offering out to center, sending 3B Shane Opitz across the plate to start up a big fifth.
With runners now on first and second, LF Ian Parmley dropped down a sacrifice bunt in front of the Evans, who then threw low to 2B Juan Ciriaco covering first, loading the bases with no outs. DH Jon Berti lined out to deep centerfield, but was enough to score 2B Jorge Flores, making it a 2-0 ballgame.
The visitors doubled their lead in the top of the eighth on a two-run home run by RF Matt Newman off of RHP Jose Ortega. The outfield sent the hard-throwing reliever's fastball high over the wall in right, his seventh of the season.
1B Will Swanner broke up New Hampshire's shutout bid in the bottom of the ninth with an opposite field solo home run off of LHP Scott Barnes. Swanner's eleventh of the year put up New Britain's sole run in the 4-1 contest.
New Hampshire starter RHP Austin Bibens-Dirkx worked five scoreless innings, scattering six hits while walking none and striking out two. The Eastern League veteran improves his record to 3-4.
Evans allowed the two runs through six innings of work, allowing seven hits while walking none and striking out two. The righthander falls to 4-5 on the year.
RHP Shane Carle, one of three Rock Cats All-Stars who will travel to Portland, ME on Tuesday for the festivities, gets the start on Monday afternoon. New Hampshire counters with RHP Casey Lawrence for the 12:05 p.m. contest.
