Reading Fightin Phils News Release
The Fightin Phils (48-42) wasted no time on Sunday after pulling away with an early lead as they defeated the Akron RubberDucks (47-44) 7-2. Reading scored four runs early and that would be enough. Reading finishes the season going 4-10 against Akron.
After a 1:13 minute rain delay the game finally got underway at Canal Park. Brock Stassi wasted no-time in giving the Fightin Phils a lead as he belted a two-run home run off RubberDucks starter Adam Plutko that gave Reading a 2-0 lead. Kelly Dugan was the other run that scored on the play. The home run was his eighth of the season and tied his career high.
Harold Martinez hit his second triple of the season to score Art Charles and give the Fightins a 3-0 lead over the RubberDucks. Brian Pointer was ejected from the game for arguing balls and strikes in the top of the second inning. Andrew Knapp extended his hitting streak to 13 games in the top of the third inning as he hit a RBI single to score Kelly Dugan.
Akron got a run off Hoby Milner in the bottom of the fourth inning as Justin Toole walked with the bases loaded to cut Reading's lead to 4-1. Milner left the game after four innings as he allowed one run of four hits and four walks with two strikeouts. Joely Rodriguez entered the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Devin Lohman hit a RBI single off RubberDucks reliever Jacob Lee in the top of the sixth inning to extend Reading's lead to 5-1. Akron got another run in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the Fightins lead to 5-2. Rodriguez allowed a run in 3 1/3 innings off five hits and one walk with one strikeout. Edubray Ramos logged 2/3 innings and gave up two hits and one walk.
Reading scored two more runs off Louis Head in the top of the ninth inning to take a 7-2 lead. Andrew Knapp hit a RBI double while Knapp scored on a ball past. Ryan O'Sullivan entered the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. He retired the side to finish out the game.
