July 12, 2015 - Eastern League (EL1)
Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
Trenton, NJ - A run walked in ultimately doomed the Richmond Flying Squirrels (45-42) as they fell, 2-1, to the Trenton Thunder (49-40) at ARM & HAMMER Park on Sunday night. The Squirrels will look for a series-split in their final game prior to the All-Star break on Monday.
The Squirrels jumped on top in the second against lefty Matt Tracy. Mitch Delfino started the inning with a leadoff double punched to the right-field corner. Two strikeouts later, Engel Beltre lashed an RBI single to left-center field for a 1-0 lead.
The Richmond lead was short-lived, as the Thunder answered against righty Edwin Quirarte in the bottom of the second. Tony Renda, Francisco Arcia and Danny Oh strung together three consecutive singles with one out. Oh's single to right field scored Renda to level the ledger, 1-1.
Tracy worked six innings before calling it a day. He surrendered just the lone run on four hits. He walked one, struck out three and didn't factor in the decision. Quirarte also worked six innings to a no-decision. He also allowed just the lone run on five hits. He walked one and struck out two.
The Thunder forged ahead with a run off right-hander Kyle Crick in the seventh. Renda sparked the inning with a leadoff single. Three walks ultimately brought him in to score. Brendan Ryan drew the walk that scored him for a 2-1 lead. Crick (1-4) endured his fourth loss of the season.
Right-hander Andrew Bailey earned the win by tossing a scoreless seventh inning. Right-hander Andury Acevedo then turned in a scoreless eighth before righty Mark Montgomery earned the save in the ninth.
The finale of the four-game series is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Monday afternoon at ARM & HAMMER Park. Richmond LHP Adalberto Mejia (4-0, 1.21) will make the start against Trenton LHP Caleb Smith (7-4, 4.20).
