New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats never trailed Saturday night, riding an early two-run homer to a 4-2 victory over the New Britain Rock Cats at New Britain Stadium.
New Hampshire (44-42) got on the board thanks to Matt Newman's second-inning longball and evened up the series at one game apiece. The Rock Cats (44-44) fell back to .500 and didn't get any runners aboard in the final two innings.
The Fisher Cats struck first in the top of the second against New Britain lefty Harrison Musgrave, making his Double-A debut. Leadoff man Emilio Guerrero doubled to right field, bringing up Newman. The New Hampshire right fielder hammered a two-run blast to right, scoring Guerrero and making it 2-0 in favor of the visitors. The homer was Newman's sixth of the year.
The Rock Cats got on the board in the bottom of the fourth frame, as Mike Tauchman singled to lead off against John Anderson. Tauchman advanced to second on a groundout, and then attempted a steal of third. Catcher Pierce Rankin fired a throw that was very high and flew into left field. Tauchman sped home, trimming the New Hampshire lead to 2-1.
New Hampshire earned back the run in the top of the fifth inning. Shane Opitz led off with a single, and Jorge Flores cracked one of his own. A wild pitch by Musgrave moved the runners to second and third, and Ian Parmley bounced a grounder to the right side to plate Opitz, advancing New Hampshire's lead to 3-1. The Rock Cats answered almost immediately in the bottom of the inning, as Dean Espy smashed a solo homer to left off Anderson to slice New Hampshire's edge to 3-2.
Anderson delivered seven strong innings, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk while fanning two. Colt Hynes fired a perfect eighth with one strikeout for a hold. Danny Barnes fanned one in a spotless ninth inning for his third save of the season.
The Fisher Cats will look to keep the good times rolling Sunday in New Britain at 1:35 p.m. Righty Austen Bibens-Dirkx gets the ball for New Hampshire against Rock Cats righty Bryan Evans. Ben Gellman has the radio call beginning at 1:15 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and www.nhfishercats.com.
The Fisher Cats will open the post-All-Star portion of the season against the Future Red Sox with a four-game series beginning on Thursday, July 16. The series with the Portland Sea Dogs features three Atlas Fireworks show, a celebration of the Back to the Future trilogy on July 17, and a visit by Curious George on July 19. Tickets are available at www.nhfishercats.com, by calling 603-641-2005, and by visiting the stadium box office.
