Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton, MA (June 13, 2008) - Atlantic City Surf LHP Brian Rodaway held the Rox to two hits and did not allow a run in seven innings, and the Surf (12-9) were able to scratch across a pair of runs in a tight 2-1 win over Brockton (10-11) in front of 5,595 fans at Campanelli Stadium on Friday night.

Rodaway and Rox RHP Wayne Lundgren were truly unhittable over the first five innings of the game. Neither pitcher allowed a hit until Rox LF Tony Gonzalez singled to start the bottom of the sixth inning. Rodaway had been perfect to that point in the game. RF Eugene Julien singled two batters later, but the Surf turned an inning-ending double play to extinguish the threat. Lundgren carried his no-hit bid in to the seventh inning. With two outs in the seventh, Surf RF Josh Burrows doubled down the left-field line for the first Atlantic City hit of the night. Two pitches later, Lundgren lost the shutout as well when 1B Eddie Kim drove in Burrows on an RBI single.

Surf Manager Cecil Fielder called upon his bullpen for the bottom of the eighth inning and tabbed former Rox RHP Kyle George to relieve Rodaway. Brockton 3B Phillip Cuadrado erased the fragile 1-0 lead on the first pitch George delivered as he drove the ball over the left field wall for his first home run in a Rox uniform.

Brockton Manager Chris Miyake turned to reliever RHP James Baker in the top of the ninth in a 1-1 tie. Baker allowed a single to C Joe Burke and an RBI double to DH Clyde Williams to give Atlantic City the lead it would not surrender. Surf RHP Derek Duclos pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his second save of the season. Neither starter figured in the decision. Rodaway pitched seven scoreless innings, allowed two hits, struck out three and did not walk anyone. Lundgren delivered eight innings, surrendering one run on three hits, striking out eight and walking two.

The two teams meet again on Saturday night at 6:05 PM at Campanelli Stadium as Brockton sends RHP Mike McTamney (0-3, 13.00 ERA) to face Atlantic City RHP J.C. Huguet (2-0, 3.32 ERA).
