New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - Third baseman Chris Kelly went 3-5 with four RBIs as the Jackals ended a four-game losing streak with an 11-8 win at home against the Sussex Skyhawks on Friday night.

Kelly opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run home run, his second in as many days, to put the Jackals up 2-0.

In the top of the second, the Skyhawks sent nine batters to the plate as they scored five runs to take a 5-2 lead. With two runners on and nobody out, first baseman Matt Weston stroked a two-run triple to tie the game. Following an RBI groundout by catcher Matt Hackney, designated hitter Walter Young laced a single, which ricocheted off Jackals right fielder Ramon Nivar and enabled two more runs to score.

The Jackals countered with four runs in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead at 6-5. Nivar began the inning with a single and advanced to second when Sussex right fielder Jorge Moreno threw behind him at first base. After catcher Craig Maddox flew out to advance Nivar to third, he scored on an RBI single by left fielder Andrew Larsen. Following a Casey Gordon walk, second baseman Marcus Sanders doubled in two runs. First baseman Luke Allen closed out the second-inning scoring when he singled Sanders home.

After Sussex scored a run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by young, New Jersey plated four runs in the bottom of the inning to extend its lead to 10-6. Larsen led off with a walk which Gordon followed with a base-hit. After the next two batters were retired, a walk to Allen loaded the bases before Kelly doubled home two runs. The next batter, Designated hitter Juan Tejeda, singled home Allen and Kelly to put the Jackals ahead by four runs.

In the seventh, an RBI single by Young and an RBI fielders choice by Sussex third baseman Jay Yaconetti cut the New Jersey lead to 10-8. In the bottom of the frame, Maddox launched his second home run of the season, a first-pitch blast that landed halfway up the hill in right field, to cap the scoring at 11-8.

Offensively, Kelly and Young each went 3-5 with four RBIs. Sanders scored twice while going 3-5 with two RBIs.

Both starting pitchers factored in the decision as Michael Vicaro (3-1) earned with win, while Michael Rogers (0-2) took the loss. Vicaro allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits over five innings. Rogers was pulled from the game with two outs in the third inning after surrendering ten runs on nine hits. Rusty Tucker pitched a perfect ninth inning to notch his fourth save of the season.

The Jackals and Skyhawks continue their series tomorrow night at Yogi Berra Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with Aaron Tressler taking the hill for New Jersey.
