Atlantic City Surf News Release
Atlantic City, N.J. - CF Josh Burrus went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs scored as the Atlantic City Surf defeated the Ottawa Rapidz, 9-7, in a Can-Am League game at Bernie Robbins Stadium on Wednesday. The Surf rebounded from a 14-1 defeat on Tuesday evening to notch their first victory in the four-game set.
Atlantic City drew first blood with a four-run first inning, courtesy of an RBI single by LF Clyde Williams and a bases-clearing double by 3B Gil Zayas. Ottawa tied the game in the fifth on SS Juan Infante's two-run single and DH Jake Daubert's two-run home run, and went ahead, 5-4, in the sixth inning on 3B Nate Hall's RBI single.
The Ottawa lead didn't last long, however, as the Surf took the lead for good with a four-run sixth inning. With one out, SS Derek Barrows, normally an Atlantic City reliever, singled home Surf newcomer RF Frankie Flores, before 2B Brad Thoma hit a two-run double and C William Plaza an RBI single, making the score 8-5.
The Rapidz narrowed the lead to one in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk to Infante and a subsequent bases-loaded hit by pitch to 2B Jose de los Santos, but Atlantic City added an insurance run in their half of the frame when Burrus doubled and later scored on a throwing error by 1B Jabe Bergeron. Kyle George set down Ottawa in order in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.
Surf starter Rory Shortell (5-2) registered his third victory in as many outings, allowing five runs on eight hits in seven innings of work, fanning five. Mike Kusiewicz (2-6) picked up the loss for the Rapidz, giving up eight runs in five and two-thirds.
For Atlantic City, Burrus and Barrows were the only two players with more than one hit. C Keith Geiger and Hall both had a pair of base knocks for Ottawa.
The two teams meet for the final time in the 2008 regular season on Thursday evening, with Atlantic City's Brian Rodaway (7-5) opposing the Rapidz' Fraser Robinson (3-5) at 7:05.
