New Jersey Jackals News Release
Quebec City, QC - A two-run first inning homer by Quebec 3B Patrick Deschenes and a solo second inning blast by C Greg Stevens proved to be all the offense the Capitales needed in Wednesday night's 3-2 win against the New Jersey Jackals. In a pitchers duel that took just one hour and 48 minutes to complete, the Jackals dropped their eighth straight game.
The Jackals opened up the scoring with two first inning runs. With one out, New Jersey collected three consecutive singles against Quebec starter Michel Simard. After base hits by 2B Bryant Nelson and DH Luke Allen put runners on the corners with one out, 3B Chris Kelly plated Nelson with a blooper to center to make it 1-0. The next batter, 1B Juan Tejeda, hit a grounder to short which looked to be a double-play, but 2B Josh Colafemina's relay throw bounced wide of first base, enabling Allen to cross the plate with an unearned run on the error as New Jersey lead 2-0. However, Quebec struck back in the bottom of the frame when Deschenes lifted a two-run home run to left center, his seventh long ball of the season, to even the score at 2-2 at the end of the first.
In the bottom of the second, the Capitales took a 3-2 lead when Stevens hit a line-drive home run just inside the right field foul pole. The leadoff shot, Stevens' fifth of the season, gave the Capitales a 3-2 advantage which they would not relinquish en route to their tenth victory in 12 contests against New Jersey this season.
Simard (9-1), who retired 13 straight batters at one point, earned the victory after allowing two runs - one earned - on five hits in eight solid innings. For New Jersey, starter Ted Serro (2-2) turned in an outstanding performance as he surrendered three runs on four hits. In the contest, Serro faced a string of 19 consecutive batters without allowing a hit. Capitales closer Jason Schutt pitched a scoreless top of the ninth inning to earn his ninth save of the season.
The Jackals conclude their four-game series against the Capitales on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. when New Jersey right-hander Tom Atlee (1-2, 4.43 ERA) makes the start against Quebec righty Luis Valdez (7-1, 1.78 ERA). You can catch every pitch via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the broadcast beginning five minutes prior to first pitch.
