Atlantic City Surf News Release

Atlantic City, N.J. - C William Plaza went 3-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored as the Atlantic City Surf outslugged the Nashua Pride, 15-9, in a Can-Am League contest at Bernie Robbins Stadium on Friday evening. The game, which was punctuated by five home runs, marked the Surf's seventh victory in eight tries over Nashua this season.

The Pride built an early lead with a second-inning solo blast to center by 1B Bryan Duplissie, and then tacked on three more in the third with LF Jerod Edmondson's three-run shot to nearly the same spot in center field, making it 4-0, Nashua.

Atlantic City's bats came alive in the bottom of the third when, after two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases with two outs, 2B Brad Thoma's grand slam to left, his sixth home run of the season, tied the game at four. The Surf then doubled their lead in the fifth on an RBI single by 1B Eddie Kim and a three-run home run by Plaza.

Nashua narrowed the deficit to 8-5 in the sixth, when Duplissie hit his second solo home run of the night down the left field line. Atlantic City responded with another four in the sixth via another RBI single from Kim, an RBI fielder's choice from CF Josh Burrus, and a two-run double by RF Jason Hurst, running the score to 12-5.

The Pride weren't finished, adding three runs in the seventh on Duplissie's RBI groundout and C Mike Torres' two-run single. It wasn't enough, though, as Atlantic City put the game away in the eighth with three more, scoring first on RBI singles from Plaza and 3B Gil Zayas, before Plaza later scampered home on a wild pitch. Nashua's final run came in the ninth on Torres' RBI groundout.

Rory Shortell (7-2) picked up the win for the Surf, his fifth in a row. The righthander gave up five runs on seven hits in six innings of work, striking out seven. For Nashua, Lance Stevens (6-5) was tagged with the loss, allowing eight runs on seven hits in four and two-thirds. The Pride ran through six pitchers in the game.

In a jumbled box score, eight of Atlantic City's nine starters got base hits; Plaza's three-hit evening was supported by Kim, Zayas and LF Joe Burke, all of whom went 2-for-4. Burrus, who stole two bases on the evening, is the first player in the Can-Am League to reach the 20-stolen base, 10-homer plateau. Despite going 0-for-4, Burrus nevertheless managed to score three runs. For Nashua, Torres finished the night 3-for-5, while Duplissie and Edmondson each had a pair of hits. The three each drove in three runs apiece.

The 15 runs were a season-high for the Surf; previously, the team had scored 14 in a 16-14 loss to visiting New Jersey on July 3. Atlantic City has also won 22 games by more than three runs, second-most in the league. The crowd of 6,019 was the club's fourth-largest of the season.

The two teams tangle again on Saturday night at 7:05. Brian Rodaway (8-6) is the Surf's scheduled moundsman, while Isaac Burkett (3-2) will toss the horsehide for the Pride.
