Worcester Tornadoes News Release
WORCESTER - Despite a complete game effort from Matt Weagle, the Tornadoes were unable to come up with enough clutch hits in dropping a 4-3 decision to the Quebec Capitales on Friday evening at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.
Weagle was strong while only allowing four runs (all earned) on eight hits with no walks and a career-high nine strikeouts. The complete game was his sixth of the season which is by far and away the league high. Chris Colabello supplied all the offense with a two-run home run and an RBI double behind a 2-for-4 effort. The Tornadoes' offense was held to only six hits by a trio of Orlando Trios, Felix Arellan, and Jason Schutt.
Both pitchers were perfect through the first two innings, but Quebec crossed the plate three times in the third for the 3-0 advantage. Issael Gonzalez started the rally with a double while Josh Colafemina followed with a single. With runners at first and third, Mike Goss hit a gap shot to right-center field which scored both runners. Jeff LaHair's attempt to gun Goss down at third got by Mike MacMillan and allowed the Quebec right fielder to come all the way around and score.
The pitcher's duel continued until the bottom of the sixth when Colabello cranked a two-run home run, scoring Scott Grimes to make it 3-2.
The Capitales extended their lead back to two when Alex Nunez led off the seventh with a solo home run to left field.
Colabello struck again in the eighth when his RBI double one-hopped the wall in right-center, scoring LaHair all the way from first to pull Worcester within one at 4-3. But the Tornadoes were unable to get any closer as Schutt closed the door with a 1-2-3 ninth for his 13th save of the season.
The Tornadoes play Game Two of the series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. which is "Wear A Tacky Jersey Night". Junior Guerrero takes the hill for Worcester; he will be opposed by Michael Simard. The series continues on Sunday with baseball card sets being given out!
